Question CV Joint

Hi, this is my first post to this forum, and I have a question, I was looking under my 4Runner today and I noticed that on the drivers side, around the CV joint and on it (the rubber flexable stuff) there were black oily beads of something on everything. Any idea where it may have come from? The pasenger side one is dry. I've attached a picture of the area, but not on my vehicle, just one I found online.
Thanks for the help,
-Bryan

Turn your wheels each direction fully and check the boot real thouroughly for cracks. If you find one get the boot replaced asap!

Well, I found a place that'll do it for $135.. but I still can't afford it, not quite sure what to do yet. Is this something common? Should I worry about the passenger side one cracking too?
