Hey all,

I finally got under my truck yesterday to see where this rattling sound was coming from. It's a 97 4Runner and I noticed that my CV's move around slightly inside the diff housing if I push/pull on them. They are NAPA CV's which I put on the truck a while back when trying to chase down a vibration. Is this something to be worried about or is it completely normal? EDIT: I wanted to add that I checked for movement while in 2wd and the engine shut off.

Also, while searching I read about bad spindle bearings... I haven't checked for play on the outer joint yet but assuming there is some, can the spindle bearing be greased like I was reading about on the second gen or does it need to be pressed out and a new one pressed in?

No idea about the movement in the diff, I've never chacked mine so I don't know if it's normal.

As for the spindle bearings that only applies to 2nd gen, 3rd gens have sealed bearings so there is no greasing possible. If it goes you have to get a new one, and they have to be pressed out and in.

Movement in the diff should be very slight, if any. There is a C-clip inside that sits in a groove that holds the shaft in the diff, I don't think it should be sliding in and out if nothing is broken in there.

Damn I hope those C-clips didn't come out of place, but as I think about it, there is no way I could have screwed that up. The movement is very slight, not an in-out movement but just enough so that I feel a little bit of a rattle through the floor. (I have polyurethane body mounts) I think I will just leave them alone unless I start to notice a real problem.
