Crank pulley hell

Doing the timing belt and water pump and ran into a snag....

Got the crank pulley bolt off without any problems but I cant get the pulley its self off. So I tried a cheap 3 jaw puller and ended up chipping a small piece of pulley off in the process..


So now the pulley is still on the crank and now I need to replace the pulley. Any tricks to getting this thing off?

Not sure on the V6, but I picked up an inexpensive puller at a local tool store that worked perfect on my 22RE pulley:

I just made sure the puller came with some metric bolts, M8-1.25 fit the threaded holes in the crank pulley perfectly.

hmmmm..... i jsut pulled on mien when i did the timing chain on my 22r, after the bolt was out i was able to jsut pull it off..... my ogre strength might have something to do with that though....

Mine pulled off easy the 2nd time I had it off, but the first time it was somewhat tight, puller came in handy.

both times ive had to take a pullly off of a 3vze ive had to use my puller. I put the crank bolt back in (leaving it a 1/4" loose or so) put the puller on the BACK of the pulley and start cranking down on it. (i have a 3 jaw) crank down on it till it gets hard to turn then take a dead blow or rubber mallet and beat on the pully, then crank on the puller some more and repeat. After the pulley has moved some, youlll have to back the crank bolt out some more and repeat.

Well here is a pic of the damage. A new crank pulley from toyota is about $400 but I found one at a local import salvage yard for much much less. Guess the OME coils will have to wait another few weeks. Now to find a puller tool.

I just used a puller threaded into the two holes in it (I think that's one in the bottom of the picture). Came off quite easy...

That sounds like the same one I used. 2 long bolts that went into the holes where the PS pulley goes on and then a big bolt in the middle that screws in how Snap-on described. I got it using AutoZone's loan a tool program.

1st time, it was stuck on really tight. I thought I busted something when it finally came loose. 2nd time I did my timing belt, I didn't have to use anything.

hmm. Use a piece of flat bar stock and drill 2 holes in it the same spacing as the 2 holes in the pully. hit it with the PB blaster too.

Have a bunch of washers handy or be ready to cut the bolts off because they can't be too long or they hit stuff behind the pully.
Now, find a socket that fits well between the pully bolt and the plate you screwed on there. Starting to make sense? Unscrew the crank bolt jamming the socket against the bar stock. keep going. Add some more spacers if you run out of crank bolt thread.

You will force the pully right off from the INSIDE. You COULD try to crank it off by tightening the 2 bolts against the crank bolt, but it is possible to strip the threads in the pully and then you are really stuck. besides it means a lot of screwing/unscrewing as you have to keep adding washers/spacers behind the bolts.

TAP it with a hammer too. The virbation really helps. Remember to tap INSIDE the pully where the rubber damper won't absorb the shock. use a 3/8ths extension to get in there.

Finally got it off. I bought the universal puller kit from harbor freight for $10 and it came with some M8 1.25 bolts. Cranked, cranked and cranked and it finally came off. The shaft looked a bit discolored, looks like water from the bad pump got moisture in there and probably rusted the shaft to the pulley.
