Angry Cracked Windshield - TX folks please read

As I was driving home from work on thursday a rock hit my windshield and chipped it. I thought, "That sucks...but I already have one chip, I can live with another." Well, when I got off work on friday the chip had turned into a rather large crack. Any of you Texas folks know if insurance will cover this? I only have liability.

If they won't, how many megabucks am I looking at for a new windshield? '98 Tacoma extended cab. I'd rather get it done at the dealer because I think they'll do a better job, but I also know it won't be cheap. Grrrrr......

The dealer will most likely sublet the actual installation.
Probably looking at $250 to $300 installed on the glass.

you can always go to the dealer, but its highly unlikely that they will have oem glass from toyota available for you. they will probably go get some third party to do the glasss for you and charge u more for it. Best bet is to either get an oem replacement glass from a junkyard and take it to a shop to have them put it on, or just get it replaced by the shop with their glass.

Glass install place. I think I had a windshield replaced a few years back on my Ranger for around $170.

It wasnt as bad as I thought it was going to be, I doubt it's covered though.

Going to say the same thing here.

If you only have liability it will not be covered.

I have a price for $150+taxes installed on my 90 p/u

I had to get a new windshield on my 92 it was 172 total, thats with labor, glass, and new wipers, and tax. I think the place was called safelite. You can look them up on the web for more details.

Thanks,
Mario

I live in Austin too... I have $100 windshield replacement coverage on my 4Runner. It doesn't require my full $500 deductible, and is not considered a "collision" so it doesn't affect my rates.

I don't think Texas allows glass coverage. I may be wrong but my insurance won't give it to me. when I was briefly in Greenville, SC the past year I was insured with the same company there and had glass coverage so before I left and changed the insurance back to Texas I got me a new windshield and one for my wife, no deductible which was cool. Correct me if I'm wrong though, I don't think many insurance companies offer glass coverage here.

Just called my agent. It is not covered, which is pretty much what I expected. I think you have to have collision/comprehensive for windshield coverage.

I don't trust Safelite. My brother got a windshield replaced there and they did a crappy job; the seal around the windshield was peeling off 6 months after it was replaced.

Guess what I'll do is find out where my local dealer farms it out to and just take it there.

Thanks guys!

Mine replacement is a PPG.

I have both full collision and comprehensive and it isn't included in mine either, but I am with Nationwide.

Just call around to the glass guys that will drive to your parking lot and do all the work there. Shouldn't be more than $200, which I'm sure is less than your deductible even if it were covered by insurance. I'm pretty sure everybody in town uses the same supply houses, so just ask for OEM glass, and you'll get it. It won't have the Toyota logo on it, but it will still be OEM.

There are only a few manufacturers than make replacement windshields so there is not a huge worry about getting a poor quality one (despite the number of glass installers there are). The windshield should be about $200 installed and make sure you mention you will pay cash (they often discount for this too).

I know. I already had mine done 3 months ago. BTW, safelite installed it, I guess it will leak in 3 more months.

BTW, I didn't have a deductible on my insurance for glass in South Carolina so it was free to me.

I'm kind of "in the business" (we manufacture windshield repair equipment). I would definitely shop around with mobile guys.

Don't go with Safelite...They're a nationwide company, and they do have some good installers, but it's usually the exception to the rule.

Ask the company how long after they're finished can you drive it. If they say anything less than a couple hours, regardless of the reason, look elsewhere.

Ask them whether they will completely remove the old molding, or if they try to go over it. Again, run if they don't completely remove it down to the metal and prime it.

Just personal preference, but I would recommend PPG glass. Pretty much the leader in the industry.

Just a couple thoughts

Hey Neo541, can you get me a tube of that rust prevent stuff that they swipe on the scratches from the razor when they remove the old goo? it looks kind of like a marker and swipes out a black marker looking stuff.

Actually, we make windshield repair systems. (rock chip repair stuff). You can probably get that from your local PPG branch.
