Couple new additions - new winch and alloys
Just thought I'd share some of my excitement.
Got a Warn M8000 winch and some new alloys. I think I am going to paint the alloys black though.... I bought them used for a really good price, and since I am doing so much driving these days I thought the weight loss of the steel would be beneficial. The blingness of them is a little hard to take but some flat black might fix that
Eventually will get a synthetic rope. But for now I am out of cash

Haha... the winch was free. I bought an FJ80 with it on there.
Yes I gaurentee the rims will be black by the end of the month...
And yes the frame has been reinforced with some angle iron!

Man the polished chrome is growing on me.
There is a writeup somewhere about the frame reinforcement. You basically cap off the frame rails that you cut off when installing the ARB bumper. I used some 1/4" angle iron cut to slide into the frame rails, with the ends being welded. You also drill a hole out the outermost area to weld a bolt.

Well I want to paint them hahah!
My question is: Should I use self etching primer first, or not?
I have had good results with both methods, however I have never used a self etching primer...just regular "primer".

Well leave it for a while and see how you like it! Having done several rims I'd say ride it out and see if you're going to end up wanting to go back down the road, then you're going to try and replicate what you have now. But if you think colored is the best route then go ahead....either primer is fine as long as the surface is properly prepped and ensuing paint coats are consistent.
I'm getting a good deal on powdercoating right now for the new rims I just bought
getting coated Harley Davidson Black Pearl
Should have them on Tuesday!

Don't bother with primer. I've now done 3 sets of rims (in black) using some paint for metal I got at home depot and never had an issue. Prep, ie: scuffing and degressing are key.

Once you go black, you never go back!
I can't wait to get some black soft 8's
You should totally paint your rims.

eh either way it will look good. No worries. I know you are talking about spray painting yours, which is a good way to do it, but I've been told that powder coating alloys weakens them. Can anyone vouch for this? I hear a lot of people talking about having their wheels powder coated and was curious if this is really a bad idea?

what? i've had alloy rims powdercoated before....its the best way of doing it but expensive and will still chip from rocks and curbs....paint is just as good in my experience with only 4hrs downtime and $20 total cost. Fyi, flat black will always look filthy b/c it attracts dirt and brake dust more.
