I just picked up a 1996 5 speed v6 4runner 4wd SR5 and when I start this beast cold the idle speed is around 1700 RPM. Stays that way until it is partially warmed up and then drops to about 1100 RPM. Once it is completely warmed up it drops down to 700 RPM like it should. I'll add that I also have 2000 tacoma 5 speed, v6 4wd SR5 and it idles at 1100 on cold start. Any reason for the huge difference? Both vehicles are Calif. vehicles so it isn't like they're that much different.

Mine does the same. Idles real high when cold. Not sure exactly where though, I'll look when i start it tonight, it will be about 17 here

I should add that ambient temperature can be 60 degrees and it will still idle at 1700 RPM's when cold.

different vehicles do different things. thats normal. My '93 22re sometimes idles as high as 2400 at cold start..but thats because it gets well below freezing in the winter.

1700 is not normal, and 2400 is very very not normal

No it is normal. Mine will start, when cold (below 20 degrees F) when the engine is cold, it will idle at about 600 rpms for maybe 5 seconds, then slowly increase to 1700rpms...or 2400 rpms sometimes ( when its REALLY cold) and idle there for under 30 seconds, then start to drop down and finally settle at 750rpms when its at operating temperatures. My roommates '96 Taco does this, just not as high usually. Other vehicles do it as well. You just probably dont live in cold enough weather for it to be as drastic.

I don't know about your '93, but in my '99 as far as I know the cold idle valve is electronically controlled, and it idles the same at 0F, 30F, and 60F, as it should when it's working properly.

It's not going to get hot twice as quick when running at 2400 vs 1200, so from a design point of view, it would be useless, if not bad, to rev that high, especially when cold.

point taken. I too dont understand why it revs that high, but all the vehicles I've been around rev higher when they are cold, some more than others of course. It does seem like it may be harmful for the engine to rev so high when cold..but it just does it...MAYBE I have a problem, so I probably shouldn't have blabbed about it being normal. Normal though in that it has done it since I've owned the truck- almost 4 years and nearly 60K miles. Also, it doesnt always rev to 2400..it has a handful of times when it was -30F and colder. the normal cold idle for my truck is around 1700-1800 in the winter. We are talking about different engines completely though..yours being newer! so of course they are different.

Shoot, my 89 with 22re idles at 2000RPM when cold reguardless of temp outside. Its normal, I mean its not really hurting anything



You also have to remember that there is almost 5 years of difference between your trucks with different engines, and the 99 is way more hi-tech than the 93!! Thats the difference in that!

Mine idles at a bit over 1500 and so does my mom's '99 Runner and that is normal then it should settle between 7-800rpm.
