Clutch Job - Other Things To Replace While The Transmission Is Out?

I have a 1999 4runner 3.4L 4x4 5spd with 208,000 miles, and I am planning on replacing my clutch soon and I am compiling a list of other things to replace while I have the transmission out.

Here is what I have so far:

Clutch
Pressure plate
Flywheel
Throwout bearing
Pilot bearing
Rear main seal
Tailshaft seal
Output shaft seals
Shifter seat
Input shaft seals
Starter contacts & plunger
Clutch fork & spring

Is there anything else I should look into replacing?

That looks like the same shopping list as when I did mine.

I found my fork was cracked when I tore it apart and later on I wished I had thought to replace the little "pivot ball" that the fork pivots on.

I also am in need of a clutch job... my clutch began to slip a few weeks ago.
I have 2000 SR5, with about 100,XXX miles on it.
Are all the parts listed by Kirk B of real importance???
I was only looking to buy the clutch plate, pressure plate and flywheel.

Please advise,

TIA,

They are all important, but with only 100K miles you probably wouldn't need most of them. You might be slightly more likely to have oil leaks if you replace the rear main seal at 100K miles than if you just left the original seal in there, for example (installation errors vs. a seal that's probably perfectly fine for another 200K miles). Same with the other seals mentioned unless there's some indication the seal has been leaking, don't touch them.

Generally speaking, you shouldn't need a flywheel, unless it's been slipping and you've let the current one get pretty cooked. Perhaps a new one is cheaper than a quick resurfacing at a machine shop for the current one?

I'd DEFINITELY replace the throwout bearing, although your clutch kit probably includes one. When we did the clutch on my wife's '96 at 220K miles, it was because the TO bearing wore out, the clutch disc itself still had a bit of life left in it.

Starter contacts I'd guess are just because the starter is already unbolted and easy to get to when the trans is out, and the contacts are a cheap fix on something that does seem to fail regularly with enough miles, but at 100K miles, I'd probably not bother with it.

Pilot bearing and throwout bearing should be done. They both come in this OEM AISIN kit I just used.

I got a NAPA flywheel which was much cheaper then others. Fit perfect, so far, so good. I'm pretty sure it will last as long as the clutch.

At your mileage, it is a little early for the seals. Wait until the next one. I found my rear main was seeping a bit at 160k so I did that but the others were tight. Starter contacts give warning so you can wait on those. They are not that hard to do on a 5-speed when the time comes. At 160k, I did mine, and they still had a little life left.

I would consider the shifter seat. It's cheap, and mine was in pieces. It really makes a difference as to how it shifts. Feels like new. Get the white one from Marlin Crawler.

YMMV - I had to replace mine at 60K miles, but I do a LOT of starts and stops off-road (picture-taking, etc.) so yes, definitely do them while the tranny is out.

HI guys,

Now that the weather is getting warmer I'm getting ready to replace my clutch.
Do you guys think I need a new flywheel???? I ask since they are quite pricey.
I believe my truck had it's flywheel resurfaced back in 2005-2006.. but I'm not 100% sure.

I'm purchasing pretty much everything Kirk_B listed above, but I'm debating on the flywheel.

TIA,

maguirre
