clutch engaging problem

hey all, I have a slight problem, i have searched and found some info, but figured I would ask anyway.
I have a 91 toy pu man tranny
three weeks ago started getting hard to shift into 1st, then started to grind going into rev. decided my clutch wasn't engaging soon enough, so i adjusted that brass rod with the lock nut on it to where its almost all the way out. it worked pretty good, had to puch the pedal all the way to the floor but at least I could go in rev. I believe it is slowly getting crappy again and i don't like it, so what could be my problem
I am not a hydraulic guy so and suggestions and a good walk through and the procedure would be nice
thanks a ton

Sounds like you need a new clutch.

is there anything leaking from the clutch master or clutch slave? that could be an easy problem to fix if that's what it is.

however it sounds a bit like your pressure plate is worn out, might be time for a new clutch...

the master cylinder for the clutch is on the drivers side on the firewall, and the slave cylinder is on the passenger side of the tranny almost right behind the starter.

The clutch slave cyl. is on the passenger side of the trans, up where the trans meets the motor at the bell housing. It is sticking out of the side, it has a rubber accordian boot on it and a bleed screw. Check the fluid level and bleed the clutch system. Block the wheels, get under the truck (not running) and have someone pump (10 x's) and hold the clutch pedal just like you would do brakes. Just relive the pressure by cracking the bleed screw and shut it before they lift the clutch. Repeat until the fluid runs clear.

You know what... before you start spending BIG money... I would suggest taking a look at the clutch/brake bracket connected to the firewall on the inside. My tranny was doing the same thing and I found a GIANT crack in that bracket. I took it out and had a friend weld it for me... and now it works like a charm! If you have anymore questions feel free to pm me. I can go in depth on how to take it apart... it may take you a while, so, I would suggest doing it on a weekend.

I agree with Keggo...check the bracket, pretty common problem. The part is hugely $$$!!! ($300 plus). I had mine welded and it never caused me anymore grief. The re and re was costly though, about 6 hrs labour.

Yeah that bracket is pretty heavy on the wallet... Yeah, it did take a long time... for me (having never done it) it took me about 9 hours. If I had to do it again though, I could probably cut the time by a significant amount. I was talking to a guy with an '86 p/u and he said there was like a silent recall type thing on the 1st/2nd gen brackets. Anyway, maybe call your local stealership and see if they tell you anything... but, tell them you read about it (which you did) and don't act like you don't know what you're talking about. Good luck with it!
