Close to buying a 98 4Runner, help with price...
It's a 1998 4runner. 4cylinder, auto, 4wd, body is in great shape with a couple of minor dings. No rust. Interior is very clean, air blows cold, slight minor tear in driver's seat cover. The only cons - literally NO pickup at all.
, it has 162,000 miles, and it needs a brake job.
Okay the owner wants $7,450.00.
Any help/advice/input would be appreciated. Thanks.

You will have very little pick up in a 4cyl, look for V6 if you want that.
I believe CARFAX requests will cause issues acc. to rules of the site.

KBB says a private party value for that truck in "good condition" is about $4600. expect to be able to haggle down to that or better since it needs a brake job.

The pickup isn't that big of a deal to me, I'm more concerned about what I should offer for the truck and what people (experienced with 4Runners) think of the rig I described.

only if you can get the price down under 5G's. in canada, runners still go for a pretty penny here. but if the current value at $4600, asking $7000+ for a very high mileage 4banger...buddy's askin WAY too much.

Are there any upgrades associated with that price, surely he has to have it priced that high for a reason. I've got the same type of 4runner, but with 135k miles and quite a few mods/upgrades, and I'm trying to get $8k at the least.

In perspective, I have a 97 2wd with under 70K miles and I picked it up for under $4500 just a few months ago.... its was garage kept, full records and flawless minus needing to be lightly buffed, the interior is perfect...
I think anything over $4300 is too much, mileage is high, it has a ripped seat, and a few dings... and even if you overlook those the brake job is a must and its at least a few hundred worth off the book value of $4500

$7450???!!!! That guy is on crack. Like others were saying, he's about $3k too much on that price.
A year ago, my friend got a 97 Limited w/160k miles, V6, rear locker for $6000 at a dealership. You can do MUCH better if you keep looking.
Also, if you're disappointed with the power, look for a V6. You will regret getting the 4 banger everytime you're on the road.

If you're into engine work, go with the 3RZ. They are ultra stout (can make 1300HP+ when built), have a good aftermarket and are ready for a turbo. If you want to tow or have a nice stock engine, then look for a V6.
I paid $5100 for my '96 w/149K, 4WD, real SR5 flairs in good overall condition (ie no dents/damage, mechanically sound, just slightly funky). You're getting ripped at anything more than $4250...

This thread made me curious- what would a 1997 limited v-6 elocker auto 4x4 with 80,000 cost in different parts of the country?
I am considering one in seattle area

i payed around that for my 97 4runner. Pristine condition, 95,000 miles, 5speed, 4banger, 4.556 gears. Mine is peppy, but thats because its manual. That seems a little much, escpecially the miles and the brake job. The only thing mine needed was a dimmer switch and tires within the next few thousand miles. I was lucky to find the one i did, its awesome, and rare.
