Climate control switches in cab not changing

The hot/cold blender switch works fine but the switch that changes direction of flow doesn't do anything. It doesn't matter if it's the arrow pointing at your face, two arrows pointing at face and feet, defrost, etc. It all blows the same.

What is the culprit of this?

And foam sometimes comes out of the vents, what's this from?

Are the switches mechanical or vacuum?

Thanks all.

The foam is prolly coming from the blend door. Mechanical. Blend door is above the blower motor.

hab,

Thanks for the prompt answers. I'm definitely going to clean the blower motor.

Is it necessary to replace the foam or will the temps still blend without it?

Back in my teenage days I had a 92 Jetta that the foam deteriorated on the blender door. The blender door had holes in it so the foam had to be replaced (Epic PITA). German over-engineering- save 2.5 grams by drilling large holes in blender door and cover with foam that weighs 2.4 grams. That will shave at least a trillionth of a second off your 1/4 mile times, right?

It'll still blend, I think you can see in the photos that the door is solid. The foam on mine is toast.

From that same thread rworegon posted a helpful tip:

So what keeps the selector switch from working properly? Air blows the same from dash vents, floor vents, and defrost vents no matter what the selector switch is set to.

Do you feel any resistance when you use the selector? Did you look at the pics of the climate control where the wires are attached? Start there. The blend door won't mean anything to you (other than the foam issue) if you can change hot to cold, but likely something has become detached or broken. You still haven't said what you're working on, but there's usually a pair of screws holding the trim on behind the climate control switch, don't get frustrated and force it.

Oops, gotta go flip the pancakes!

Now that you mention it, there is not much resistance. I suppose the cable could have come loose. I haven't removed anything yet to take a look. I'll wait until I get the time to clean the blower motor.

Thanks again for the tips and advice.
