Clicking noise--HELP!
Need your advice guys. My toy has about 167K miles on it. I just had the timing belt changed when it had 164K (2nd time) but I had already noticed the clicking noise...sounded like lifter noise. It gradually has gotten worse and a guy told me to run a quart of really thick oil in the engine that would clean the lifters (forget the name but looked like STP)...his opinion is that what is wrong with it, just dirty lifters. Well, the noise keeps getting worse and I have another 1000 miles before an oil change so I wondered what all you guys think I might need to do. I have guessed getting the valves reset (a little pricey if that's not my problem) but I'm only stabbing in the dark. The engine noise is starting to get embarrassing when driving up to a crowd. Can even hear the ticking when driving down the road at 60 mph. Any suggestions?

if that is your toyota in the avatar , then you have no lifters. It has an overhead cam that may need adjustment. is it a 22-re (4 cyl)? I'm just assuming it is. Before you spend money on getting the valves adjusted invest in a stethescope (for autos) and try to pinpoint the tick that way.

That is my toy in the avator but it has the 6 cyl. motor. I was told it did have lifters but no rockerarms, spacers instead?

My truck is a 22RE 91. "TICKS" like crazy when I first start it up, than goes away about 20 min driving.
Turns out its my exhaust manifold gasket. The problem is the last two bolts are stripped (Found this out when I replaced the gasket. I guess it's a common problem on the 22RE.) So at some point in my life I'm going to have to tak eit all apart again. get another new exhaust manifold gasket, and either tap the bolts to 3/8's or put in some helicoils.
Sounds to me like you may be having the same problem. Check your spark plug wires and see if theres black soot on them (the spark end). good indication that theres a leak.
