Clearing up the tundra brake upgrade...

HA! You thought that I was going to clear it up, tricked ya! Actually I need something cleared up after much searching. Here it goes:

I am going to head to the junkyard saturday, as they say that they have 5 or 6 tundras there. My question is about all this size talk. From the beginning I thought that the tundra brake upgrade was good for all of the runners. After reading more about it, it seems that if I already have 16" wheels, I have the same or almost the same size brakes as the tundra, and the upgrade would not really benefit me. I still want to grab some disc brakes for the rear, but should I even bother with the front? My goal is to put discs on the rear for easier maintnence, and a little better stopping power so my fronts stop warping.

Thanks for all the help everyone!

The tundra discs are not any bigger than the 4runner disks, in diameter. However, they are much thicker and thus, resist warping very effectively. What you have to watch out for is there are two different sizes of tundra calipers, only the smaller one will work with the stock wheels. It has been determined that the larger calipers are not worth the extra work and additional mods you have to do to make them fit. I believe the smaller sized calipers are around 191 mm, these are the ones you want.

Thanks Joe! So now the question lies: Will converting the rears to discs be enough to stop the stock fronts from warping under normal conditions with some light towing, or should I take the time to swap the fronts too?

The Tundra discks are actually about half an inch bigger in diameter. I have the bigger calipers and no problem with the stock setup with 285 tires and everything! I dont think that a rear disc conversion will be easy and if you do it right and buy the kit at allprooffroad.com you will actually lose your e-brake. This is why not too many people have done this mod because I have the 5-speed and I need the e-brake! Good luck with whatever you do and if the conversion works tell everyone how you did it!

Just to the front Tundra conversion to the 199mm calipers. That will give you more than enough stopping power and your warping issues will be gone. Don't worry about converting the back.

Wow, I just read about 10 more pages about this mod that I hadn't seen before. I think I am set with the 199mm used calipers. My last question for sure is how do I know if they need to be rebuilt? Is there something visible I should check for?

If the pistons move in and out freely without leaking, the calipers don't need to be rebuilt.

You most likely won't need to, but check for anything unusual. I didn't need to rebuild mine, but I did anyways. BTW, if you want I have an extra OEM Toyota
rebuild kit for the 199mm calipers that I'd let go for cheap (I ordered one for each caliper, but each kit covers two calipers).
