That's a sweet 4Runner man! I groan for some of those features that Toyota won't put on US models!
Where are you located??

Nice Surf.

That is the same engine many are wanting to put in the new FJ Cruisers.
There is an outfit that will do it too.

The overhead console, Diesel engine, front bumper with integrated fogs (didn't start that here until 99) side marker lights, mirror on the fender! So many things to list, and Toyota didn't put any of it on our trucks.

you actually WANT a gas engine? Whats your gas prices like over there? Diesel is cheaper AND gets better MPG over here.

Why didn't you get the intercooled 1KZ-TE engine? would have been a lot nicer driving around while looking at the huge and functional hood scoop..

btw, we got the same color as mine

stephenmarr, just the person I have been looking for...and by the way, nice surf!

I have a question for you. Me and a handful of other members here have added these Field Montiors from over seas (just like yours) to our 4Runners here on the Western half of the Globe. We have figured out all the wiring of the Unit except for 2 wires we have no idea where they connect or their possible function. I have a few contacts in Europe who own surfs with these FMs, but neither will spend the time to find out for me what these 2 wires accomplish. Here's a few pictures of them:

Here they are singled out:

Again, notice them in this picture coming out of the White plug:

Here they are coming out of the White plug on the back of the FM:

If by any chance you could find out for us where these 2 wires connect or maybe what they accomplish, it would be greatly appreciated.

I fully understand if you do not want to under take this quest, but if you can shed any insight into this mystery or even know someone who can, we would be very thankful. We have also been unable to locate any surf wiring diagrams to explain these 2 wires. The buttons all seem to function properly...the compass works, altitude & barometer work correctly and the temp readings are displayed. I have been told by others, these 2 wires control some type of either a "snowflake" feature where as the Unit displays a snowflake on the screen when the temp drops below freezing outside. Others have said it controls some type of sunroof light switch dimmer.

Here's a link to my thread (that also contains the write ups of others who have installed these FMs) if you need some more pictures of what I am describing: Write Up

And last, but not least, Welcome to Yotatech!!

Thanks. Any information you can provide will be helpful. Well, at least I can cross out the "snowflake" idea. Good to know.

I have been to the first site you listed...even posted some questions on there a while back. I have not been able to get on their site in some time though. (Need to check my settings to see why I am being blocked. I keep meaning to check into this, but keep forgetting.)

Like I said, these 2 wires are not a huge issue, I am just curious what they might do. No hard feelings if you can't uncover the mystery

I am looking for some of those Toyota large window visors. If you have some I'm willing to do $80 shipped to a 40222 residential zip for some. I also want the license plate HiluxSurf emblem on tailgate.

why would you want to put a small engine such as the 1KZ-TE in an FJC when you can fit the new 4.5L Twin Turbo Diesel out of the newer land cruisers. (i've seen an FJC down here with it).

and i like the rear spoiler with integrated brake light. i've got one on order for my 91 Surf from th UK.

that guy was selling a 3rd gen hilux front bumper (pre '99 style) with cool valence that had integrated driving lights, kind of like the performance products front spoiler. he also had hilux front fenders with the mirror, side markers, and the hole for the antenna on the opposite side of the US version. i emailed him about some other parts and he said he's got a whole 3rd gen surf overseas that they are parting out and as long as you pay the shipping he'll sell it to you. he was very nice too, not your typical ebay jerk. i may give him some business after taxes come back. perhaps he's got a Field Unit that some one could snag? not me, i like my roof console and i've already got an inclinometer.
