I tried looking for a write up for the check valve brake booster replacement. Is there one out there? I had the brick brake last winter and it scared the crap out of me , so I'm trying to avoid that this winter.
I have a 97 sr5

I changed mine out a while back - seems like there was 1 bolt for a braket - maybe 10 mm - and then you just pull the old and replace it with the new.
Of course the vaccuum line has to be taken off and put back on, but nothing to that.
Unless there is a different check valve you are referring to - ?

Thanks for the info guys just installed it today, I needed some pliers to pull the sucker out. Is it normal to have a pressure release sound when I pulled it out?

wouldn't worry about that, i don't remember if mine did or not when i changed it.

Yeah I just gave it a few pumps on the brake and it was fine. One more thing to check off the list 👍🏽

I've had that happen a couple of times. Only when the weather is especially cold - like below 0. Which rarely happens here. If I let the truck sit and warm up for a few minutes it would thaw out again and work properly the rest of the drive.

I'd forgotten all about it. I should probably fix that. Thanks for the reminder!

Yeah I figured out the warming the car part out after the first time I tired to stop and had to use my e-brake! But sometimes I don't have time to fully warm up the car, and last winter we had a lot of below 0 days over here in NJ.

Easy fix, but dam that valve is expensive, 40. But i guess it's a small price to pay for peace of mind

It's mildly scary how much pressure the pedal needs to do any braking without the vacuum assist. You *really* mash that brake pedal, and the truck barely slows at all.

After the first time I learned to just pump the pedal a few times when I first started it to see if the valve was going to be stuck shut or not. I seem to recall getting a brake pedal use or 2 out of it before the dead pedal.

Yeah I have a 9 month old riding with me every so often so I'd rather not have that happen again, or ever!
