check out my new indestructible front bumper!!!!
ok, so--- as some of you know, i nailed a dog with my 4runner last month and the bumper was destroyed, so i just had the most super heavy duty bumper i could think of made for the 4runner. Its made of .188wall 4" square tube and .30 wall 4" l-bracket.....GRRRRRR dont even try to dent it!!!! ----- Aaaaand, if that wasnt strong enough already, we put a piece of .50 wall cold rolled steel tube between the two supports-- just in case i feel like ramming a tank or an armored car or something like that!
what do you guys think?

I'm thinking that if you hit anything with too much force, you'll be bending your frame rails. The trick is to get a bumper that will bend/absorb the impace just before bending the frame rails. If you I'd rather replace another bumper than screw up the frame.

It can not be labled as industructable unless it has been tested by Cornbread. If he can not break it, then it is indestructable.

Hey Gadget,
Did you see Monster House the other day, there was a guy on there calling himself Gadget, for obvious reasons. He did all the mechanical, and complicated stuff. Reminded me of you.

hey tricktoy, strengthening the frame rails is next week-- im going to cut the front of the frame out that the bumper mounts to and put some more square tube in its place--then there will be braces from the new frame crossmember to the a-arm mounts instead of the flimsy stock skidplate.
by the way, it wieghs 100lbs-- took two of us to put it on the truck. and i like the fact that its ugly-- i keep waiting for a little civic to do the "cut you off and slam on the brakes" move in front of me.
gadget-- i doubt that anything could break a 4" cold rolled L bracket that is not an explosive or a military vehicle--- the frames on big rigs arent even that thick...but if a rock basher wants to experiment....im game!

Not to disparage your creation, but having seen aircraft carriers get folded up running into things, I'm a little skeptical about how indestructable your front bumper is.
I've found wooden bumpers to be wonderfull things. They flex wonderfully when I bonk into trees and such. They don't show damage, and are dirt cheap.

your not serious are you......wood......no, wait, you said (WOOD)
id like to see a picture of someone with a wood bumper--well i guess wood might be acceptable if your frame is made of wood too.--well why not make the rollbar out of wood! if i rolled it in the forest, i could just make another one...wait, pine probablyl isnt the best material, ill have to go wheeling in a mahogany forest then huh..
but seriously, do you actually think wood is a safe alternative?

Don't know about a bumper, but it makes a great replacement bed!
Actually I've seen many wooden front bumpers, mainly around my home town in east central IL.
Mostly on older full size fords and chevys that get driven around farms.
