Check Engine Light: Running Rich
My '99 is apparently running rich. The check engine light came on, so I took it to the shop to have them run diagnostics. They now tell me they need to run more tests to find out exactly why it's running rich, and gave me an estimate of $330 (including the $125 I just paid for the initial diagnostics). The guy told me that if it continues to run this way it'll ruin the catalytic converter. Does a '99 Limited even have a catalytic converter? I've been going to these guys for years and trust them but I think this guy may have smoked something bad recently as it sounds like he doesn't have a clue what he's talking about, or is trying to jerk me around.
Anyone know if there's a simple fix to this, maybe an O2 sensor is bad and just needs to be replaced? Note - it has almost 90K miles on it.

Ask him what code specifically it was.
If it is a 0171 or 0172 then you likely need to clean your MAF sensor.
Post back what it was and we can help (need the # for the code).
Yes, your truck does have a catalytic converter.
You will not ruin it by running too rich.
I think your mechanics need to start reading this board before they put their foot in their mouth.

California requires it
All automobiles in the state of California are required to have catalytic converters. And if your engine is running rich then there is definitely the potential of wearing out your cat. It's similar to a filter on a cigaret. So if you are running too much smoke through that filter then eventually it is going to wear out.
There are a number of reasons why your truck may be running too rich, but you'd have to give more details about the engine condition. Specifically, if there are any recent mods or repairs that have been done. It sounds like your mechanic may be screwing you... $125 to tell you that is a joke. He just hooked up to your cars computer and looked up some code in a book... probablly spent all of 5 minutes doing it. I would be careful if I were you.
