I'd say hunt for an '86-88 Toyota pickup standard cab or possibly a '79-85 although I bet the '79-85's would be higher in price. The IFS trucks often seem to go really cheap.
There is always the chance of getting really lucky and picking up an extra cab for cheap, but it is more likely you'll wind up with arthritis from keeping your fingers crossed

I've been reading alot about Suzuki Samurai's. I guess they are great little rock buggys.

What do you want it for?

The owner of a local driveline shop also puts it this way:
"Guy comes into my shop and asks what kind of 4x4 to buy for his kid."
"Get him a Scout."
"Really? Are Scouts that good."
"Nope, but the junkyards are full of them and you can always get a part."

Check the papers of where you live and the city of where college will be, if there is a difference. And of course, Ebay.

The Sammy is going to be the best bang for the buck. You can build one up to handle the toughest of trails for less than the cost of a stock toyota, and that includes the cost of the sammy. Exo cage it, roll it, flip it back over and keep going and it'll still run rings around just about any toyota on this forum.

if you just wanna go beat on something get a ranger or an s10. cheap and everybody has them

or a nissan 720 pickup...i think they're just about the cheapest 4x4 you can find anywhere, even more so than the sami. thing is though, the sammi is much cheaper to build than a nissan

Cheap and 4x4 don't go together well remember 4x4 in uppercase is $x$... You can pick one up cheaply but you'll be spending alot on it for repairs and etc. I paid a cheap price for my 4 runner $1000 back on 9/2003 now I have about $5800 into it so far in repairs, mods, etc.

The thing is about sami's yes they can be built but it's gonna cost you money either way most goto toyota axles because the samurai's axles aren't really reliable over a 32" tire and they upgrade thier wimpy power plant to at least a 1.6 sidekick motor because the 1.3 is a dog. That's what I have been told by samurai owners when I crashed the Zukimelt in 2002 at badlands when I had my 95 nissan pathfinder.
