Changing brakes can be a B****
Well 1st time changing the brakes on the 4runner since I got it last summer. Everything was going smoothly untill I started to bleed the right caliper. Couldnt figure out why there was brake fluid coming out of the caliper. Somehow the squared off o-ring that seals the 2 halfs of the caliper slipped down a little bit and didnt completely seal.... I hope the dealer has them.
Been working on the isr and deckplate mod as well, I need to go up to the local muffler shop to get some 2.75 inch pipping. I will post some pics when im done.

Well, no one sells a caliper rebuild kit and no one has an o ring even remotely close to the one I need. Gotta get a rebuilt caliper now, simple jobs always end up being too much work haha. 80 bucks for the passenger side caliper. I wish it was the cost of the 15 inch calipers.

just doing regular calipers. I should be alright with it but thanks for the offer. I am going down to obx on saturday with a couple of other vehicles if your interested in going.

Did you split the caliper? I'm sure I understand which o-ring you are referring to. I've done a few complete brake replacements on my '01 and have not have any issues.

sorry... that was $110 per side for the loaded caliper.
My metal brake lines ended up being rusted on both ends so i had to replace them. Only 6 bucks for a side. You might want to have one handy.

Hmmm... why? You never need to split the caliper, unless if it was leaking in the first place (which is really not common). Even to rebuild a caliper (replace pistons or piston seals), you don't need to split the caliper. Dealer sells a caliper rebuild kit, but it does not come with the oring that seals the two caliper halves. Have you asked them to see if they sell that oring separate?

Were you just changing the pads !?
If so, all you need to do is pull out the retaining springs and slide them out. Sometimes you do need to use something to wedge in there and push the pads back into the calipers so you can pull them off, but, yeah.
Unless you were changing your calipers, or rebuilding them, theres no reason to disassemble them!?
I thought you were maybe talking about the drums. Those are a PIA to replace. That damn spring is impossible to stretch to the other side.

I use a cotter pin puller tool to stretch the spring.....works great.
BMWToyotaMan, don't feel bad about opening up the caliper by accident because I've heard of other people when they first attempt to do the brakes and assume you need to undo all the caliper bolts. You may have a heck of a time finding an o-ring for that if the dealer doesn't have it listed. You could then either get a remanned set or a used one from the junkyards.

im getting a rebuilt caliper from Bap Geon. I wish I would have looked closer at the caliper setup before I took everything apart, would have save $90.

yea should have read yotatech 1st. I have done brakes many times on other cars so my ego took over and I didnt look at yotatech.

I just checked my Parts Catalog looking for the caliper o-ring for a '98 4R (out of curiosity), and it's quite funny (not really, but sorta...) They actually have a note on the diagram, pointing to the caliper, and it says "We do not supply o-ring on caliper connecting surface as a separate part, because it is difficult to keep performance of sealing after disassembling and re-assembling". That's a direct quote. A little late, I know, but it may help others who are planning on disassembling their calipers.
