Cb

I just baught a CB and a Firestik, and I had a question. Is CB coax different than TV coax? Can I use the 18' TV coax I have sitting in my garage? That would be cool.

I actually have another question: If you have a 3rd gen pickup or 2nd gen Runner, can you post pics of your CB mounted? If you own the former, could you also post pics of your antenna?

Thanks for everything.

Yup, it's different. Maybe not in cable construction, but it definately has different ends.

Well, at least I don't have to dig through crap to find out if the TV coax will work. But I have to spend more money.

Thanks for the help, Dave.

A little tangent: Would anybody like to donate to my 'I need some coax for my CB so I can be cool' fund? Let me know.

Welcome.

Can't help you with a donation. Until my next unemployment check, I have whopping total of $1.84 (combined cash and checking account) to work with.

Check out our CB Round-up here.

Scroll down to the article.
There's a few 2nd gen 4Runners there.
I have more pics of my CB install on my website listed in my table of contents.

If you haven't bought a mount yet, most of them come with the cabling. At least mine did.

Yes, they are different cables. CB is RG58 (50 ohm impedence) and TV is RG59 (75 ohm). Do not use RG59 for CB.

What makes you think you need 18ft? This link describes the appropriate cable length. In reality, for properly tuned single antenna applications, ANY length will work. The only reason you would need something specific would be to null shield current, which does not exist when the antenna is properly iinstalled.

Not true.
See this post.

You are suppose to only run an 18' length of cable for the CB range.
Firestick has the info in their FAQ file.

Q Is the length of the coax cable important?
A We find that it is very important ... especially with high performance top-loaded antennas. Your safest bet is to use 18 feet (5.5 meters) coaxial leads on all of your CB installations.

Q I only needed 9 feet of coax to go from my radio to my antenna. How should I handle the excess?
A What ever you do, do not roll it into a small convenient coil. It will become an RF choke. If you cannot let it lie loose under a seat or in a headliner, wrap it into a yarn-like skein of about 12 to 16 inches, put a wire tie in the center and tuck it under your dash, seat, etc.

^ That's where I got 18' from. I read that last week sometime.

Thanks for the CB Roundup link, Corey.
