I was thinking of removing my cat, i have a 1993 4runner so I dont think it will effect anything engine wise other than a bit more smoking in this god forsaken world and I want my exhaust to be a bit louder but I dont want to get a muffler because I think that it will be too much louder for me.

Does anyone know if there is a pipe for sale so I can easily swap the cat and test pipe in and out?

Keep your cat and get a different muffler.

Do you live in an area that has emmision testing? If so you will have to switch the pipe out each time. Also I'm not familiar with the exhaust system on your model but do you have an O2 sensor past the cat? If so it can screw with your ECU. Overall I would recommend a muffler, there is a wide range of muffers all of which put out differrent tones.

yeaaaahhh not like it matters the whole world can know because i know a couple poeple who dont use cat or have them drilled out , do you want their names and phone numbers , maybe even there social security number?

There are a lot of places that it isn't illegal to remove your cat. In all of Southern Colorado there is not emmission testing or required cats

If it came with a cat, it is supposed to stay on. The emission standards are a federal mandate - that's one of the reasons that automakers put them on. The testing for compliance is on a state to state level. If your rig is a licensed daily driver it needs to stay on - it is a federal offense to remove it.

Good to know, I have emmisions testing where I am so have never consided removing mine, but a good number of people I know in southern Colorado have removed theirs, with no hassle. Most of the muffler shops will even remove it for you. So it is illegal just not enforced at all.

Don't take it out. I took mine out when I got my new exhaust set up a while back. Not only does it sound bad but I lost too much back pressure and have crappy low end power because of it. It makes climbing hills much more difficult. Plus now I have to spend more money to put one back in and those suckers are not cheap.

For better sound a muffler is the only way to go.

It never ceases to amaze me how many folks think that they have no contribution to make. They think their exhaust won't matter, their vote won't count, no one will notice. I live in a city with that ranks as one of the US's worst in terms of air quality. If we could get all the individuals who think they aren't contributing to the problem to realize they are not only part of the problem, but could be part of the solution, guess what would happen to the quality of air.

Don't be a self-centered ignoramus. Do a search and you'll find that those that took their cats off usually found little or no gain. Better yet, drive behind a pre-cat and find out what everyone else already knows (nose?).

Just to stir the water a little...When I used to be on the ls1 forum..there were a few guys who removed there cats and still passed emissions. But yeah like everyone else, Im sure youll notice very little improvement power wise and just an annoying exhaust tone.

A lot of cars, especially newer foriegn cars, will pass emmsions testing without a cat, but the tech inspecting the car is supossed to look to see that you have one or else you fail the test. I am guessing that they lucked out and the person doing the test was lazy and didn't feel like checking.

Like was previously stated, your bottom end performance will suffer. Removing a cat helps high rpm performance at the cost of low end. I won't get into the legalities of it, it has been discussed to death already. If you want more noise, change mufflers or even remove yours altogether. You'd be surprised how much the cat muffles the sound.

Guys (you know who you are), let's stop posting that you want to take your cat converter off. It is obviously illegal and as such I don't think we (yotatech) wants to know about it, let alone discuss it. If you want to know or have questions about a legal activity, please ask those instead.

FYI Taking off the cat will hurt torque severely, if you think it is blocked then replace it.

It is a violation of FEDERAL LAW to remove a properly working catalytic converter on a vehicle so equipped. Doesn't matter what state you live in or the local laws. the fine is somewhere in the neighborhood of $5000.

As most have said, it's illegal to remove the cat. Those that argue the point will likely do what they want anyway - with no regard to reason or legality. The Yotatech community is not for the purpose of discussing illegal activities.
