cant get tires mounted, rubbing issues.

so my whole ordeal with this has been.... interesting. 4wheel parts.....i hate you...

preface: SS lift#1, stock 3 split spoke wheels.

i order tires, they sell them to someone else, to compensate me for my lost time and such, they knock off mounting and ballancing. ok then

so i go in this morning to have it done, they tell me the tire hits the upper control arm, and cant let me leave with it rubbing.

because NO ONE around here has those tires, i go ahead and buy them, but i no longer get any discount or anything, so i got screwed. whatever.

so they tell me to buy new wheels, but one of the customers says that will just cause me to have rubbing issues with the fender and bumper.

so now i have 4 285/75r16's in the back of the runner, no one will mount them if they are going to rub. i could plop them into the back of my dads pickup and get them mounted and ballanced, and put them on the runner myself.

so heres my question, does yours rub the control arms? how bad? would new wheels with a different back spacing work? should i get the shaved control arms from steve? what about it weakening the front suspension?

and whether or not 4wheel parts screwed me or not, it certainly feels like it. i picked them, at this particular location, because they treated my dad very well when he went there for his lift on his super duty. they were more than accomidating to me to my face, but i seriously think i got screwed on this one. if not screwed, extremely hassled.

if you want a quick fix for the time being. get some 1/4 or 1/2 inch spacers so they dont touch the control arms

what kind of tires did you get again? BFG? BFG ATs really shouldnt rub because of the side lugs being caved in compared to a MT or MTR.

but wheel spacers will do the trick inless you want your stocker 16x7s widened to 16x8 (not sure of the money involved on that).

From all my reading I have noticed it to be fairly common...

As far as spacer I reccommend installing lug studs that are longer than OEM by whatever width spacer you get.. this should solve your issue.

I test fitted 285/75/16 BFG AT's on mine with stock rims and it rubbed the upper control arm. this was also with the SS #1 lift. i got new rims 16x8 with 4.5" bs and now they're fine. although they do stick out more than i want, but hopefully i can fix taht soon.

from what i've read some people get this rubbing issue and some don't. i don't know what the deal is with that. also from reading, 4.25" bs is perfect on a 16x8 wheel.

For some reason I am drawing a blank as far as what rim you are talking about.

I know from experience that my stock Toyota rim, the Limited 5-spoke rim caused the same issue on the a-arm, I had to rush order some Lexus LX470 wheels and get my tires mounted before somebody scooped em up. I couldn't have been happier. Granted, I love the Limited 5-spokes, I still have them and when money gets less tight I may get a set of street tires and use those for long trips and such.

Wheels spacers these days aren't as sketchy as they used to be. I believe the Marlin spacers are the best, from what I've heard.

so if i bought a 16x8 wheel with 4.5 back spacing i would solve my problem?

now, recomendations on black steelies in this size? even an alloy i guess, just looking to minimize cost but still do this right.

my wheels in question are the stock wheels, they can be seen in lots of the pictures in my sig.

) i was exhausted and only had 2 hours sleep.

on another side note, the 4runner now smells like the inside of a tire store, i LOVE it. lol.

I'd guess shipping for steal wheels down to you would be around $50.

4 wheel parts said those would not fit, only the 87 would, and those wer eback ordered 3-4 weeks minimum.

the ones from wheelers are looking mighty fine,

i would like so solid numbers, what backspacing i need to clear, with out sticking out too much...

16x8 4.5 bs is what you need.. this is what most are using even with 35s and of course shaved or custom upper a arms for the 35s

but for 33s 16x8 4.5 bs or get some spacers for your stock wheels

You need to realize you are trading one rubbing issue for another. Some work will need to be done on the pinchweld with the wider wheel and tire.

I've researched this a lot lately because 285's might be in my future too. Basically, from what's been posted on YT, you have three options...

#1: Get Land Cruiser wheels from the 80 series between the years of 93 and 98. They're 16x8 with 4.5" BS. I've seen them for $50 a piece on ebay and other sites. You'll clear the a arm, but with the wheel sticking out, you rub more on the pinch weld and possibly on other plastic parts.

#2: Wheel spacers. They're the cheapest fix, but will cause the same issues as option #1. A 1"-1.5" set should work fine. On ebay for $60 a pair.

#3: Modded upper a arms from Sonoran Steel. Lets you keep the stock 16x7 wheels. You'll avoid a lot of the other rubbing issues with options 1 and 2 using these. They're expensive tho: $250 a pair IIRC.

They're a lot less expensive than the ones from Sonoran Steel, but I've heard of people having alignment problems after installing them. No personal experience with that though.

Yes you'll have problems with alignment if you don't get it done afterwards...... never heard a shop having problems adjusting the alignment.
