Can't get the bolt back on the CV shaft

So my inner CV boot broke and I wanted to know how to replace it which now I know.
However, I can't get that 35mm nut back on that holds the CV shaft in place back on. It tries to start and then wobbles off.
I confess, I did whack the end of the shaft a few times with a hammer. I did'nt realize that was forbidden till it was too late.
I don't see any irregular threads on the end, but there must something wrong there.
Do I need a thread chaser? Any suggestions would be welcome as this is the last piece before it's driveable again.

Thanks!!

Red face

I think you figured this out!!

Some lessons are a little expensive to learn.

Hammer on threaded ends not a real good idea.

You might be able to clean the threads up with a file.

the threads on the nut are not messed up are they??

Yea some lessons are expensive to learn
The nut is fine so it must be the threads on the shaft. I'll take a look today and see what I'm missing.

Thanks!

You need a set of precision files and patience. Eventually you'll get it to thread back on.

I finally got it back on!!
I bought a set of small files from Harbor Freight tools for $3.99 and took the small V-shaped file and filed out the outer threads on the shaft.

Then I was able to get the nut started enough to stay mounted, which is all I needed. I slowly and patiently turned the nut so I could keep getting a bite on the threads.

It was hard turning the nut and a few times I had to use a breaker bar. I'd turn it a few turns, then loosen it. Then turn tighten a little further, then loosen it, etc. I used ATF fluid to lube the shaft and nut.

Finally, I got the nut past the bad threads and it was smooth sailing from there.

Thanks for the help! And from now on the rubber mallet stays IN the 4Runner so that doesn't happen again.
