Cannot Pull Codes suggestions?

Hey Guys I have a 1996 4runner Limited with 91,000 miles. And I took it to the dealer due to the engine Check light. And apparently they cannot pull the codes. I have used several code readers to try to pull the codes myself, but to no avail.

Apparently they said my extended warranty is void because I installed Aftermarket car stereo equipment.

And I don't want to be stuck with paying a huge bill. Any suggestions for possible problems?

They just charged me $96 for telling me what I already know

Thanks Guys.

Wow... The dealer hit you for $96 to pull codes, they couldn't do it, and they STILl charged you?? What a RIP OFF!! If you have a laptop, you could buy yourself a very nice OBD-II reader for less than that:

What dealer did you go to?

I would be writing a letter to the service manager real quick if something like that happened to me. And there're the regional managers as well.

To get the codes read, you can hit up an AutoZone or possibly a Shucks. I know that AutoZone will read them for free, and tell you what they mean. I _think_ Shucks will as well.

As for trying different readers on your own, which ones did you try, and what were the problems? I haven't had an issue using a reader on my 96.

And, as for the aftermarket stereo... Personally, I think it's a load of crap, but I'm not sure. Other folks on here will be more versed in that.

This smells funny.

The code reading aside, they cannot deny you warranty coverage unless they can prove that your aftermarket accessory or it's install caused the failure. It's up to them to prove it. Their issuing a blanket statement like that is absurd.

Go Google the "Magnason Moss Warranty Act". It will explain the warranty process to you and what does and does not void an extended warranty.

Call the regional service manager or Toyota corporate and tell them what the dealership told you, then tell them that you are aware of the Magnason/Moss act and would like them to assist you in obtaining coverage. I will bet you a dollar you get a call from the service manager and he will appologize and offer to make it right.

This is actually CNA insurance...which can be bought through Toyota Dealerships...this one was. So I don't see why they really care. It's money for them regardless of where is comes from.

Thanks for the tip that is very good to know.
