Can a overheating tranny cause coolant loss?

So I was out 4x4 ing in my 2000 3.4 sr5 on a snowy logging road and I guess I was giving my tranny a workout cause the temp light came on. I stopped, turned around and coasted downhill till the light went off, about 5 mins later. Since then I have changed the tranny oil.

Just today my engine temp gauge was higher than usual (this has never happened before), check the coolant level and the reservoir was dry. Topped up reservoir and radiator. Guess time will tell now.

My question is: when I overheated my tranny would that have caused a coolant loss in any way??

Thanks!

tranny temp light was on? hmm. thats no good.
You changed trans fluid...I assume no coolant in trans fluid.

Radiator was low. Hmm.

Trans fluid smell burned? Really dark?

Were did the coolant go.

Yes the tranny fluid was definitely burnt and darker. However I wouldn't say really dark. Not that I'd know what to look for but it don't think there was any coolant in the tranny oil.

Something just occurred to me! A couple days after the 4x4ing a buddy said he smelled coolant when I picked him up. I guess it was leaking then, should have check reservoir levels then.

usually its the other way around, a loss of coolant will cause the tranny to overheat. give it a good look over, may have to get a pressure tester

Agreed... sounds like the loss of coolant caused the trans to run hot
