Can I Convert a Non-ADD front diff to ADD to work on my Truck?
So I have found a front IFS diff off a Tacoma that I want to swap into my truck - but it is a non-ADD front diff - and I have ADD. Can i make it work easily? Someone mentioned just switching a tube - or something but I'm pretty uninformed on how the front diffs are put together, terminology, etc. Can someone give me some layman's insight if this will work or not.
thanks
John

on the right side of the diff you have a diff tube on it. on an add truck this is where the add actuator is, and on a manual hub truck its a straight tube. they unbolt from the diff housing, so if you want to keep add i would just swap the tubes.
but why dont you get the cv's and spindles and convert to manual hubs

So your saying the diff pictured below is ADD and that's what all the junk is boxed in green. The non ADD diff tube doesn't have that stuff on it Correct?
As far as manual hubs - I don't have access to those parts - or the knowledge about all that either, or the money... LOL.

yeah, that part in green is the add tube, and the manual hub tube has nothing on it.
I have a whole set up to switch to manual hubs, and if i was at home i would take a picture of the tube.

Dumb question for you guys, but I have a stock 02 3.4 with add
and I have a few manual hubs and cv joints left over from my 3.0,
I was wondering how hard it would be to swap it out to manual hubs, do I have the right parts?

You need spindles, hubs, and cv's off of a manual hub taco.

I have an '02 4runner with ADD. I would like to install manual hubs. My thought is to purchase (used) a set of front axles with "knuckles" from a manual hub Taco. Will I need to do anything except swap out the axles and hubs? Does the front diff need to be modified in anyway? Is there a write up about this? I searched but didn't find anything.

You are also most likely going to have to deal with abs, your gonna want to try and find a manual hub taco with abs or disable your abs.
I don't have to deal with abs, since i never had it.

Thanks for the reply. So I've got a good price I think from the junk yard for the axles. I confirmed that they are ABS. $350 for both. That price is the complete axle and what they call the "knuckle". Do you think the "knuckle" includes the spindle? I should confirm that. I know it includes the hubs.

Front diff questions
The one thing I'm confused about is the ADD vs non ADD diff. If I switch the axles over to manual hubs and related parts, what if anything will I need to do to the front diff.

Well if you switch to manual hubs, you can still use your ADD diff just follow this link:
http://www.4x4wire.com/toyota/tech/add/
This is what I have now after I completed my 4wd conversion with manual hubs.
Also you can have manual hubs with abs, but that will require new wheel bearings, SST socket, and a 20+ ton press. The manual hubs spindles have a spacer, whereas the ABS unit have the ABS tone ring...simply switch the two.

Not sure
OK so I've read the write up. What I'm not clear of is two things: First by performing this modification what is it actually doing? From what I've read it keeps the locking sleeve (in the diff) locked by mechanical means and defeating the vacume system. Secondly I have an '02 4runner, when I switch to 4wd hi I don't move the transfercase lever I press a button, will this interfere with the operation as described by the write up? Oh I guess i had a 3rd, If I don't modify the ADD diff but install the manual axle and hubs etc... what is that going to do?

Switching to Manual Hubs will defeat the whole purpose of the 4wd button on the shift knob, whereas before you simply push that button and your in 4wd. With the manual hubs you will need to have them locked to complete the 4wd.
So in your case, you will just need the manual hubs/spindles and Non-ADD cv axles.
