Calling all IFS 4WD guru's
Hey guys i own a 99 4runner, list of mods in the sig, i have ran into a 4-wheel drive problem. it will engage, but has a slamming noise and jerking motion. almost like something is grinding up. if i put too much power on it, say trying to 4 wheel out of a rut or something it will dis engage and make a gear rub noise. i at first thought it was my transfer case. but it seems that it is working great and it is somewhere in the IFS. i know the IFS blows and i am looking to SAS very very shortly but for the time being i wonder if anyone has had this problem and if its a quick fix. 4 wheel drive engagement sensor or something. the days building up to this problem was a small very light knock noise then progressively got worse and worse and one day it just started slamming. thanks for your time in advance guys.

I have already done that to see if its my transfer case, and the verdict was my transfer case is fine. it does go into 4wd and it does move but every 5 feet or so it get a large slam comming from the front diff.

If it is spider gears or ring and pinion your whole front diff will be fried due to all the metal shaving rolling around in it.

Blew the front diff, be it spider gears or ring and pinion....jack up front end and put it in 4wd and spin the front tires by hand to see if you get any resistance.

I agree with Corosion. Try draining the front diff first (loosen the fill plug first, then pull the drain plug). Bet you 1 dollar you will have some large chunks of either spider gears or ring and pinion gears that will come out.

Geez, Scuba, 10,000 posts? Get a job.
That binding-popping thing is soooo blown diff. Be thankful it was the front and it didn't take anything else with it.
