I am in the process of rebuilding my 85 4runner. She has a 22re and I am going either .020 or .030 over, which ever it cleans up at. My machine shop doesn't think it is a good idea to get a slightly bigger camshaft because of smog. I know they say they are 50 state legal, but has anyone had any trouble passing with a bigger cam. Thanks in advance.

well, with otehr tweaks you could still pass, but it might not, and if it doenst you are screwed... you would basically need to test it to test if it would work... there is no maybe it iwll or wont guessing... it will or it wont... and several factors affect smog testing

My 22RE passes CA smog.

Not by a great margin, but it does pass.

I know several people with hotter cams in CA who passed smog. Some carbed, some injected. As long as the overlap isn't too ridiculous, it shouldn't be a big issue. However, ymmv.
