Red face California Emission ??

Is there any way to tell from the VIN what emission package a vehicle has.

As far as I have looked I can`t figure it out.

If I was near the vehicle simple to tell .

1998 4Runner

Reason being some places list a Federal and California ECM I want to be sure to get the correct one.

Thanks

4runners originally sold in California, had two cats I believe. My 98, came from Arizona and only had one.

96 and 97 4Runners only had 1 emissions level there was no distinction between CA and Fed, only 1 cat (the dual CA cat didn't start until 99 or 00, I believe), and only 1 ECU per application.

I don't really know about the 98's but it couldn't hurt to look up part numbers on http://toyotapartseast.com/ or http://www.toyodiy.com/parts/q.html to see if there are different emissions options.

EDIT:
Just looked up a 98 4Runner on ToyoDIY.com and thre is a CA spec ECU:
89661‑3D590 VZN185..5F, CALIFORNIA SPEC

So don`t even call I get a call when the manager is going on vacation.

Ok so if your manifold bolts into a single pipe with two cats its ca emissions. If there us a two pipe flange with one pipe its fed. My truck came from pa and is a 99 but I got stuck with stupid ca emissions. Are you having issues?

Easy. No Cali.'s in 1998 MY. You are Federal one-cat system. VIN's themselves do not tell you if Cali. or not. The dealer can use the VIN to get this answer off their data base.

Thank you all for the answers .

These things happen at times when data bases get set up incorrect

Why does that surprise me!!

Turns out to be a little interesting!!!

When I went to look at the vehicle the cat had been removed and it looks like the O2 sensors as well.

And there you go!

My 96 basically says cali on the hood sticker. One more cat than you have...

(sorry)

Yes, but it does not refer to the two-cat Cali. Exhaust emissions systems installed in '99 and '00. That label is referring to other Cali. standards that your truck meets. There was only ONE version of exhaust emissions in '96--a one-cat 50-state system that met Federal and California standards. Same is true in 1998.

Those labels are confusing.

EDIT: See my correction re '98 below.

Yes on the labels. I find the info on cali vs fed vs what's posted in the forums for early 3rd gens vs my experience with parts for the 96 confusing. Either way, I still have one more cat than wyoming9 does.....

OK, I did a little more research. This part seems to be 1) not available and 2) used only in production after 08/1998 which is MY 1999. Same is true for the other listings of 1998 Cali. Spec parts on Toyodiy.com--they are only used in MY 1999 trucks. I stand by my post. No Cali. exhaust in MY 1998.

From Toyotapartszone.com:

Compatibility Info:
Part No. 89661-3D590 fits the vehicle applications listed below:
ModelProduction DateEngineTransmissionTrimBodyDoor
4Runner 1998.07-1999.08 6cyl 3.4L MTM SR5V
If Wyoming9 plugs his VIN into http://www.toyotapartszone.com/ and comes up with a Cali. Spec cat (or two), I'll reconsider.

Thanks for all the help

I should be able to get it figured out.

I will only be using the OBII here to tune the engine and make sure all is well.

Being it is going in a Mid eighties truck as long as I match it all to the ECM that I use it should be fine.

If you have the donor VIN, your best bet is to plug it into both toyodiy and toyotapartszone, and then see what they give you for ECM and for cats and sensors. Are you trying to keep the CEL light off? If you don't care about the light, the only parts that matter to engine performance are the ECM and the front o2 sensor. Then forget the cats and everything downstream.

ECM's vary by transmission, but if it's not connected to the trans, then any ECM for that engine should do, if it is '98 and maybe earlier. (That's a guess, I haven't tried it. Good luck figuring out the differences among the ECM's between '96 and '98 other than engine and tranny.)

I have another thread in the 3.4 swap section.

I have a good known used ECM and a brand new one # 89661-3D361 that way at least 2 of my 3.4 engines will share the same ECM.

These are Manual 4x4 ECM`s for a 97 4Runner

For sure don`t need the MIL on just fought for around six months with the last one.

When I go to my Toyota dealer Saturday I will get them to check the vin.

I am sure I will get it sorted out it is a fall and winter project to keep me away from the evil Horse women
