Bushing removal

I am trying to remove the old bushings from my leaf springs in order to put new ones, now keep in mind I am attempting to do this at home so I dont have access to a shop torch just my little hand held one. Is there something that can dissolve the rubber thats not too toxic or is there another way, these things are in there good.

One option, drill out around the center sleeve:

Then push it out and cut out through the outer sleeve (cut into the gap where the eye wraps around):

Then you can usually pop the bushing out. Also helps to jam a chisel into the gap in the eye to pry it open a little.

Or see if you can find a press to borrow:

I drilled, then torched (little handheld propane torch), and then pressed (while it was still hot)... then torched some more and pressed some more, then carved with a screwdriver.
It took awhile, but eventually the sleeve came out.

Maybe next time I will stick it in a campfire, drink beer, and collect the sleeve from the ashes at the end of the night.
