Hi all,

My parking brakes keep locking up, I think I should upgrade my brakes,
since 4Runner brakes are no good anyway.
Are there any aftermarket kits available for my truck?
If so, which ones do you guys recommend.
I really would like to get rid off the rear drums.

could go with tundra front brakes for the rear i dont think theres a kit for it

Those are probably your parking brake bellcranks freezing up (happens alot in areas within the rust belt......esp the northeast.....I fought with the same thing on mine). You'll need to either rework the old ones or buy new ones from the dealer. Either way you're looking at similar work to doing a rear brake job so I'd change the shoes and turn/replace the drums while I was in there anyway. Trying to go to disc brakes in the rear has been done by a few but it's not recommended for those that use their parking brake alot (like those with a manual tranny do).

I've been researching alot here and found out that coverting to Tundra brakes is the way to go...
I also found out that there are (2) kinds of Tundra calipers.... 199mm and 231mm. Obviously, I would like to go with the larger ones. I know people have fitment issues with these large caliper when installing them into 16" inch OEM wheels. I don't think I'll have that issue, since I have 17" American racing wheels, but we'll see.

This is what I'm about to purchase. Please let me know if I'm missing something.

(2) - 231mm Tundra Brakes 13WL
(2) - crossed drilled Brembo Tundra rotors
Stainless steel brake lines - which ones should I buy???

Stay with solid (vented) rotors and stay away from crossdrilled and/or slotted rotors.

Rebuild your OEM calipers for $25 (DON'T buy remans. for $80/ea), upgrade to some good pads (I recommend anything Hawk) and flush your fluid. Unless you tow in the mountains every week, then stock brakes are more than adequete for your truck.

Stainless lines are all pretty much the same, just make sure wrap them (I use hockey grip tape) to prevent dirt from working in between the braiding and rubber and wearing them out.

Drilled rotors are garbage for any application, but waste your money if you must.

Rear discs are always nice, but too much work on a 4Runner. I've seen a very expensive kit that adapts Mk I Supra front calipers and rotors to the rear end of a 4Runner, but it certainly isn't easy or necessay. You would see a big increase in braking performance with them, though.

For the money and effort you will get way more performace by upgrading your front brakes and putting good shoes in the back.

Just go with standard Brembo blanks unless you want the crossdrilled for looks (don't expect any additional performance). You don't need stainless lines, but they may stiffen the pedal slightly. Don't forget to use a new set of pads with those rotors (best performance with low dust come from the Akebono ceramic pads).
