Brake Question....

I can hear my pad "screamers" again.....

I've had the oem brake pads on my taco from the dealership for a while now. I replaced my pads with them last time I liked them so much.

Is there a better option in pads them from the dealership? One that might perform better for the same price or just as good for less money?

I think they were around $50 last time I bought them.

I've also been on the same drums for 80k, is it time to replace my rears as well?

Thanks!

do a search there are tons of info on brakes and brake set ups.. the fronts most like brembo blank rotors with oem pads or hawk pads

the rears, just have them turned (same as the front if possible) and buy new oem pads.. i have 106k miles on my truck and the back brakes are original.. yes time for some new ones for me too

Yeah...I've been using OEM pads from Toyota. I like them a lot. My rotors are fine in the front, I'd say they'll look good in the rear as well. Is turning them necessary?

Well I just took of my rear shoe to have a look. They look great! Dirty but they don't even seem to be wearing any. I've been riding on them for 80K.

How long does a shoe usually last??

well mine have lasted 106k miles so far but i drive a lot of highway so i dont use my brakes a lot and i dont abuse them either.. i would clean them out with a lot of brake cleaner and let it dry.. now as far as the squealing goes, i am assuming this is upfront? you may need to have your rotors turned in the front and new pads and go from there.. why dont you pull your front pads off and inspect them?? its very easy to do

It's new pads for sure, I don't even feel the need to check them out as the rotors feel fine. It's around the same mileage as the last time I needed new pads. I'm on my way to get some here in a sec.

And the sound is coming from the front right wheel. It's just a slight rubbing sound.

I just changed my front pads and went with Porterfield pads from horsepowerfreaks.com and they don't squeal. I haven't changed the rears yet.

I'd get some ceramic pads like Hawk LTS or Autozone pads. Both are around the $50 mark. Autozone's come with a lifetime warranty.

My rotors were fine until 90k, then it warped. The new set up with new blank rotors and ceramic pads were much better than factory.

New pads are installed. No sounds, stops on a dime. I used pads from Toyota again, I dunno how my truck could stop any faster.

What's the stopping distance difference between the OEM pads and the ceramic Hawk pads and the like? I just can't see it being much.

Also, do those pads wear the rotors? My rotors look and feel great and I've been on them for 80K without turning them.

I think it's pretty hard to wear on the rotors unless your riding the brakes down a steep hill or something. And actually I'm not completely sure about the stopping distance with some pads. Harder pads with kevlar or ceramic just give off more dust than softer ones but can work better in cold or rainy weather. Unless you have some really big tires/wheels, expensive pads probably won't really make a huge difference.

The stopping distance between the two will be about the same, given the same stock rotor size and tires. The tires are usually the limiting factor there, anyway. The biggest difference you will see is that ceramic pads are more resistent to brake fade. When you're going down a steep grade or riding your brakes pretty hard, OEM brakes will start to lose bite. You won't notice it with the ceramics (not as much, anyway). I felt a more consistent feedback with the ceramic brakes than the OEM ones, too. Another big thing around here is that the rotors will warp with the factory set up (given the extreme braking conditions). Ceramics help lessen the chance of that happening.

at 80k miles and since you live in the mtns i would highly suggest you have them turned man. they maybe fine i dunno but to be on the safe side i would but since you do not feel vibrations in braking and etc then screw it. leave as is. turn them the next time..

i bought some lifetime brake pads from autozone and i kind of dont like them. i hear them grind when i slightly let off the brake and let the truck creep very slowly. i dont know if thats normal but i dont remember them doing that in my old pair of pads.

Ever wonder how autozone is able to offer "lifetime pads" ? Doesnt seem quite right does it?

i am thinking that its bc they are hard as a dang rock! with toyota's hard rotors and matched with autozones' lifetime pads which are hard also could be the reason why i have minor grinding when i ease off the brake or ease into the brake going slow.. you can here it griping and sliding across the rotors.. i have had those pads checked out by my mechanic just to makes sure i put them in right and he said that they look fine..
