hey all,
I have a 97 4runner, with what i think is a unique problem.
so here is goes last December i put a daystar 1.5inch suspension lift kit on my 4runner, all was fine. 2 months ago i was changing the oil and noticed that my CV axel needed to be replace( the factory ones)... so i did i replaced them with some aftermarket ones i picked up from my buddies shop. so today i was chaning the oil and noticed grease all around the passenger side of the axel. upon closer inspection there is a hole in the CV boot that came from the ribs of the rubber boot rubbing.
i took it to my buddies shop to show him, only thing we can think of is that because of the lift it put the axle at a "weirder" angle then designed casue the boot to wear..

has anybody else had this problem?
is their more then one kind of aftermarket axle?
or even just different boots?
wat are my options as my brain is fresh out of ideas

A 1.5" lift should not be causing those issues. I have a 3" lift and my original 15 year old boots lasted a year before they tore. My reman Napa axles have been fine for months. What brand of aftermarket axles did you put on there? I'm thinking the boots on them are very poor quality.

Tons of info on here about 3rd gen CVs and boots. Do some searching.

Cheap aftermarket boots is your issue more than likely. Get some OEM boots.

I had that problem. It's not even a little unique.
Check my build thread (in sig, start with post 2 to find what you need) for the cv boot saga of arg-ravation. You can also search 'boot stretch'.
If you don't have one also search 'dif drop'. With a mild 1.5" lift it may solve your problem.

we got the boots from napa which we all thought was a good idea. i also heard of "extreme angle" axles not too who makes them yet but i check my order books.

Napa boots are good quality. You must have more than 1.5" lift or something else it going on...? Post some pics so we can see your cv angles.

That's a lot of boot ribs mashed together for just a 1.5" lift... I bet you have at least a 3" lift but even that doesn't explain the boot tearing so quickly. Lots of these trucks have been lifted 3" with no problems.

My 87 had a 1.5" BJ spacer and I had the same problem, tore the boots on the original cv's pretty quickly and then replaced both axles with NAPA cv's and they were spraying grease everywhere.

KBALL, i just looked at the kit box. it is a 1.5 inch. but i also put on new shocks. perhaps they could be longer then stock

Measure from the center of the hub on the wheel to your fender. Stock height is generally around 20-21" so if you're over 22.5 something is up.

I changed my whole shaft with an autozone part and the boot came apart a week later.
2nd shaft was a charm!
1.5 lift will not cause the boot to rip

That sounds like a 3" lift to me. Either you have the wrong shocks or the spring perch is not set up right for you. Possibly, the perch is installed upside down which happens a lot and would give another 1" of lift over what it's supposed to be.

Even still a 3" lift should not shred boots that fast..? I don't get it.

neither do we... i dont wanna just keep on replacing them every few months, and now that winter is going to start coming i will be using 4wheel to play in the snow, so i really want this taken care of.

i looked on the warn website they do not have a listing for a 97 4runner on their application chart. where would i find manual hubs and how do they fix this problem i am having?

also do low would i drop the diff? do i have to change my skid plate at all?

Diff drop will be 1", will work with stock skids. Manual hubs are an undertaking and some bucks, search 'manual hub conversion'.

The work to do the hubs aren't a problem for me to do, I guess my question about them would be how affect te cv boot angle ?

I found a pair of aisian manuel hubs for 50$ used is tht a good price???? And also they are 27 spline will they fit my 93 runner?
