Black soot on dash

My 2001 4x4 SR5 stepside Taco spends allot of time off road but I keep it clean by washing all the time . The air filter is changed every 3,000 miles and all mantenice is up to date. The truck looks close to new inside and out but it seems to be leaving little black specks or soot on the dash coming from the defrost ducks. There is no filter for that or my AC on this truck , this is the info I got from the owners manual. Any idea what could be causing this? It's not bad but you can see it after about a week of useing the heat or defrosters. Mike

My girlfriend's 2000 Solara does that, don't know what it is though. Hers seems to do it regaurdless if she has used the defrost recently. We live in FL so there are months at a time when the heat never comes on.

It could be that foam crap that insulates the AC ducts got pinched in there and is blowing out as it breaks down. I've seen this on an American make.

Yep I think that's what it is. The foam insulation is breaking down. I had that happen to my previous truck. Unfortunatley it doesn't stop till the foam completely wears out. You could change them if you wanted......

Does anyone know how to get at that foam? I looked under the dash at the heater vents but can't see anything. What do I have to take apart to get to it? Thank's for any info you may have. Mike

all the heater vents are press fit, mine kinda wore down to, ya actually have to pull them apart and it should be in between the two pieces, sorry i cant be more specific im sure someone else can, but its not that difficult to do, just can be a pain to get to some areas, good luck though, somethign i should prolly look at doin myself.

bear,

look in the tech section and look for slc punk's write up on how to remove the center radio panel. it should be fairly close to your taco.

there is a main duct there in the center. you can probably see the vent that pushes the air upwards on your window
