Hey guys,

So had the tranny looked at today and turns out the oil level was VERY low. More oil was added and the hesitation I mentioned in another post is gone.

Where is the best place I can find a tranny kit for my 97? I was told there are two tranny's for that particular year/model/trim. A 340 and 343...does anyone know what I'm talking about?

Are you talking about a shift kit or a rebuild kit? As far as the different trannys go I would guess the difference would be one was used for the 2.7 and the other the 3.4. That's purely an uneducated guess.

I'm looking for a tranny filter kit so I can drop the pan and replace the filter and gasket. I've got the 3.4 AT. I've found a couple of places online that sell them for $50-$60 and they say they fit the 95-02 4runners. Can someone verify the same tranny's apply for those year models, even though they are different generations?

If you want to save some money, you can just drop the pan and clean the filter with brake parts cleaner. Use some FIPG like Permatex to seal it back up instead of a gasket as well. The filter is a metal screen so it doesn't really need to be replaced and I believe that it is generally agreed upon that cleaning it is just as good as using a new filter. Make sure to clean the magnets at the bottom of the transmission oil pan and place them back where they came from too.

I found the filter hard to clean and for 22 bux at autozone/local parts store for new, cheap insurance against it gunking back up quickly

As for the the gasket, just use regular old gasket sealer in the tube.

This is why i added a remote filter kit between the stock and trd coolers. I use a moble one oil filter and a filter magnet from filtermag.com. I change the filter every year.

When I took my 4runner in to have the tranny cleaned at the dealer, i requested a new filter and they said it was N/A for my tranny.
First of all the dealer was Lithia Toyota which is notorious for not doing what you ask, but perhaps they just meant cleaning it was just as good.

Yeah the filter is mostly enclosed in a metal case so its very hard to clean it. As you can see here:


And the type of things that get trapped in it are not really soluble to brake cleaner or solvent anyway, ie... like little slivers of metal etc.... IIRC the gasket is part of the filter, I got a new one from Bob Bridge Toyota https://www.1sttoyotaparts.com/partscat.html for about $38 I think it was. The parts guy tried to talk me out of replacing it, but I had the pan dropped anyway to remove the VB so I wanted to put a new filter on it at that time.

Thanks for the replies guys. Will be getting my hands on a tranny filter kit for right about $25. Turns out there were 3 different tranny's and I had to identify mine with the VIN through the dealer. Not sure why or what the specs of the different tranny's are.
