best "lunchbox" locker?

best "lunchbox" locker?

Okay I've decided on a full-time locker. I am leaning towards the Lock-rite, but not for any particular reason. I want to spend under $400 if possible, it doesn't matter whether gears need set up or not, as I will be regearing anyway.

I put a lock-rite in my 92' 4runner last fall, so far i am pleased with it. Not the smoothest driving around town, but you get used to the locker noises and i'm sure they are all like that on road. Works great off-road. I would shop around if I were you, got mine cheap off ebay and I see others on there once in awhile.

I agree with PoBoy, Detroit all the way. I have one in my '94 PU in the rear with a TrueTrac up front....4.88's and 35's with the V6, it does really well. In my '88 4Runner I am running Detroits in both the Dana 44 front and the Dana 60 rear...but I won't know how that is until Thursday when I wheel it for the first time with the new set up.

Double check your vin plate and find out what size diff you have.
Mine is a 7.5" rear (axle code F302).
Then give Randy's Ring and Pinion a shout and have them send you a complete 3rd with the locker/gears already installed.
They can take a True Trac locker origionally ment for the front of an IFS truck and change the gears around so they work in the rear of our 2wd trucks.
All told should be about $800 (Gears, locker, setup)
Or, you can have them send you just the locker.
PM me if you want to do that.
I had them send me a True Trac seperate that will work in the 7.5" rear, but I'm finding install cost around me is rather high.
I'd be willing to sell it to you so I can have Randy's send me a complete setup.

I dunno, maybe cause they are lil baby lockers...they sorta fit in the r&p like a pb&j in a lunch pail...I guess...they are basically just easier to install.



PS is the true trac a locker or limited slip??

The True Trac is a limited slip locker.
There's not much available for a 7.5" rear axle, unfortunatly.
Mainly because most lockers for that size are made for the front of trucks. The True Trac is able to be put in the back because the inner gears can be reversed.
I seem to remember only 2 other "lockers" available for the 7.5" rear, the lockright and one other (I don't remember it).
I like the idea of the True Trac because the axle will function normally when on pavement (for the most part), but once the wheel starts to slip it starts "sending power" to the other side.

Detroit gearless is available for 7.5" I believe...I think I will probably get the gearless.....

Just make sure you can use it in the rear of your truck.
(Give them a call before ordering)
It may only be available for the front of an IFS, I could be wrong though.

Lunchbox refers to lockers that do not replace the whole carrier, perhaps because they are small and can fit in your lunchbox. Alternatively, they replace the spider gears like something you would put in your lunchbox.

If the cost for the locker goal is 4 bills, then Lock-Right, EZ-locker or whatever is similar all do the same thing. You ought to be able to find a full Detroit for that much as well. Install is obviously extra.
