I've got a 98 4runner 2.7 with a blown head gasket - 180K miles, engine was running strong till it blew, but white smoke that smells like antifreeze, etc all the symptoms so I figure blown HG. debating if I should do the HG or put in a used engine, seems to be some debate on this forum which is the best route. I'm not finding many rebuilt heads online, they seem very expensive and with the gasket kit seems like I'm looking at almost $800 vs. $1100 for used engine from carmonkeys, but I know nothing about the history of that engine. Love this truck, always been babied so the blown HG came as a total surprise, trying to figure out the best route to bring my 4runner back to life. can do the work myself either way, have an engine hoist and the tools for the HG. any advice or links for heads or used engines really appreciated.
