Will opening the lid give me an idea of the power ghain I can expect too?

Yes it will give an idea, its just allowing more air in by reducing the 90 degree angles everywhere. Some may argue its pulling in hot air in comparison to the deckplate or that its not a straight line in, but regardless there is more air available. Maybe someone who has done both will chime in, but it will give you some idea of what to expect.

I took the lid off before I did the deckplate, and in my opinion, the deckplate is superior. With a deckplate, the air comes in straight from the front (arguably slightly cooler air) and with into the intake. With just the lid off, you're pulling the warmer air from the upper part of the engine bay. I think it also sounds better with a 6" deckplate.
