Hey guys, wanting to do my ball joint with OEM parts. Was wondering if someone had a part list or done a write up on this I did search and didn't really find what I was looking for. I know I wanna do upper and lower ball joints, was wondering what stuff is reusable IE snap rings castle nuts, prolly need new cotter pins and stuff like that. Thanks a lot guys love yotatech!

Thanks man did find much on the upper joint prolly gonna run those LR control arms for the upper, Toyota in the bottom they come with nuts and pins in the bag and it looks fairly easy we will see.

Hey! I'm glad you posted this thread because this is on my list of things to do as soon as the funds become available.

If you wouldn't mind, could you update with your final parts list and pertinent part numbers? I've read many threads about this, just haven't seen one where the parts and part number information is compiled all nicely.

Also, if you have any tips/tricks, keep us updated. I'm sure things may have been covered in another thread, but still relevant.

I'm still trying to decide if I do OEM, or aftermarket. I know that OEM is quality, I have probably 250k on the factory ones, but the price is insane. I'm looking at doing the following:

Upper Ball Joint
Lower Ball Joint
Inner/outer Tie rod
Wheel Bearings
Upper/lower control arm bushings

This is around $1000 with OEM parts, and about $600 with aftermarket. I'm wanting to start building my 4Runner, so want the front to be good to go. I can do the work myself, just have to justify spending $1000 on a 99 4Runner with 254k on the clock. Though if I did buy a lower mileage vehicle, I would probably still want to do this just to be on the safe side.

What do you guys say?

@ 99_Runner: Yeah, I'm in the same boat sort-of. I don't have the money right now to do the full job, but when I do, the same concern will exist.

I've read a bunch of threads about the ball joints, and some people praise the Moogs, saying they're just as good of quality at the OEM, while others decry even the thought of using anything but OEM.

I get lost quick reading all of the threads about "555" and "Sankei" and whether they indicate the same OEM quality. People say they've bought Raybestos, Moog, and others, all stamped with the "555". Some are certain there's only one manufacturer and all are equivalent, while others say only the Moogs are genuine "555" and same quality as OEM.

It's hard to know where to go on this one. I certainly would rather save up and spend a grand on something I know will give me back another 100K miles than spend $600 on something I may have to replace again soon.

I too am interested to hear the opinions from the gurus and those that have performed this job before.

Exactly. I've read a ton and it got confusing really quick. For me I have to decide if I want to just start putting money into this vehicle, or look for one with half the mileage on it.

Buying online will probably save you money. If you're in any local toyota clubs sometimes the dealerships do discounts. Every part I buy from the dealership I get at 25% off cus of a local club I'm in.

As far as whether to go OEM or not.. Safe yourself the time, money, and agony... GO WITH OEM.

For those who want to save:

Check your inner and outer tie-rod ends. If they're ok, then you don't have to change them together with the ball joints. But don't scrimp on the ball joints. go with oems.

I have done the lower and upper ball joints even if they were ok. I just thought of it as a cheap insurance. But I didn't changed the tie-rods as they're still ok.

For those? Do we need to buy a new boot when we buy ball those ball joint from the dealer? I also read on one of those write ups that the ball joints come with new castle nuts and pins from the dealer included in the bag is the right? I'm prolly gonna run LR upper control arms save myself the time an hassle!

I updated my parts number post for the ubj's and dust caps.. What do you mean by new boot? All parts are ready to install on vehicle as is. When I bought my parts from the dealership they came with new castle nuts. I'm not sure about the cotter pins. I think I recall having to use my own. If you're going to run LR uppers then a UBJ replacement is obviously unneeded.

Quick question. Most the links on your other thread, maybe this one too, they are listed as being compatible with Tundras and Sequoias, not 4Runners. D you happen to have the numbers for the ones listed to fit the 4Runners?

If you look at the bottom of the compatible vehicles list you can click "See All Vehicles" and it will expand.

Sometimes the site will make updates to part numbers, leaving the old still available on the site. However, they will show the new updated part number. I rest assure you that all the part numbers I listed are the most updated ones.

Well I have a friend who's wife works at a Toyota dealership. They are going to hook me up with employee pricing. Go a quote of $850 for all of the above, thanks JWaldz, plus everything for the wheel bearings. Not too bad, and then the front will be ready for the lift and future 35" tires. I'll try to take lots of pics for you guys.
