Axle Tone Ring and Retainer position???

Okay, this is going to be a complicated issue to explain...

I recently had the rear wheel bearings pressed in and out at the machine shop but it looks as if they didn't position the tone ring and 2nd retainer properly. I admit I don't fully understand where and what the retainers actually do. But with the axleshaft attached and looking through the ABS sensor hole, I can see that the tone ring is not centered up and 2nd retainer is not riding the inner axle oil seal like so:

With the tone ring not centered the ABS is acting weird and with the 2nd retainer not positioned within the inner oil seal, it's causing gear oil to leak through.

I was originally under the impression that all the rotating parts on the axle shaft were pressed up against each other but it looks as if there should be spacing somewhere on the shaft between the parts.

My question is: where is the spacing supposed to be?

How I originally imagined the parts' positioning with everything touching up against each other on the bearing side (incorrect, tone ring not centered to ABS sensor, inner retainer not sealing with inner oil seal)

Which image shows where the spacing should be?

Tone ring pressed together with the other parts, 2nd retainer spaced inwards toward splines independently.

1st retainer and c-cli[ together with the bearing. Tone ring and 2nd retainer spaced inwards towards the splines together.

Thanks guys, I just couldn't find much information on the subject and expected the shop to know the tolerances. The only thread I've found that similarly describes my problem is below, but there were no updates on a solution or where to space out the tonering:

you are headed in the right direction. Pure and simple the shop screwed up. The tone ring and second retainer have to be positioned at a correct depth on the axle shaft. The service manual says to measure this depth prior to removal of the old ring and retainer. Then you are to set the new ring and retainer to that premeasured depth. Sounds like they took the old parts off and just guessed at where the new parts should be...You may be able to contact your local dealer and ask them if they have a specific measurement they use. Then take those numbers to the shop that did your work and have them fix their problem. On a side note did that seal come out when you pulled your axle shaft? If so that is another problem. Those are supposed to be pressed into the axle housing. Hope this helps. I just did all this work to my truck...I wish i would have written down the measurements.

Thanks guys. digitalracer, the axle oil seal did come out but it's being replaced with a new one. I replaced the thing 3-4 times before I realized it was the bearing throwing everything off.

I don't think I'll be taking it back to the shop. I bought a press and I'll be doing it myself from now on.

Is there any way to press the inner retainer and tone ring off without cutting?

yes, there's a puller tool attached to the press that can sort of hook and pull the retainers and bearing out.
