Axle Seal/Diff breather question

Alright guys, I've got a quick question for y'all that I was thinking about tonight. I know that the purpose of rear diff breathers is to relieve pressure and help prevent rear axle seals from being blown. Is that the only real reason they are used? If so, what exactly is the purpose of a front diff breather? There is no solid axle, so what sort of seals are up front that you want to prevent from being blown?

I was just curious as I was thinking about this instead of doing homework tonight. Thanks guys-

Ya right, almost impossible when I have my computer sitting in front of me. If I'm not on one of the forums, I'm staring at all of the girls laying out on the main campus field in bikinis!!! Sometimes I really love the South!!

Same kind of seals, just not as big of a housing.

Extending them is done so that when you dunk the warm housing under cold water and the air inside contracts it doesn't suck in water past the seals, and that the breather itself doesn't go under. The stock breather is just a one-way valve, out only to vent excess pressure. Usually when people extend the breather they just replace the valve with a small fuel filter or similar.
