Axle Codes

I am looking at a 4runner to get its Rear E Locking thrid. The Axle Code is A04A. From searches, I am finding that it could be a 4:56 (brian894x4's site) and from off-road.com it says this is a 4:30. Does anyone know which code A04A or B04A is a 4:56? Yota tech has some info from a search, but the codes are a little conflicting. If you have factory 4:56 gears, would you post your axle code.

My wife's 1999 4:30 4runner E locking axle code is A04A.

I wasn't aware of a 4.56 3rd gen gear option. You sure about that?

Well I am really not sure. I know that you can buy a new 4:56 from Toyota with a E locker. Otherwise I don't know.

The 3rd gen V6 4Runners with 15" wheels, (both 4wd and 2wd), came with 3.909s. The V6 4Runners with 16" wheels were 4.10 and with the e-locker option it was a 4.30. 4 cyl models with 16" wheels had a 4.56 ratio.

These are probably the best sites for checking on that kind of stuff, I know it helped me figure out what my 97 SR5 4wd V6 with 15" wheels had.

sgirt,

best thing to do is to call toyota usa with your vin #. sometimes it takes a few minutes to get through and to get your answer, but you get the DEFINITIVE answer.

I have pulled the part. The F/R came out of a rolled '98. Code is A04A and the gear is 4:30. Counted 43 and 10 on the rear. From a post above, it really doesn't sound like the 3rd gen 4runners came with 4:56.

I was looking or 4:56's, but the 4:30 will work. (Bob_98SR5, I will be pulling my 4:88 members today and installing the 4:30's. Will PM you.

The 4.56 gearing was available on the 3rd gens, 4 cylinder models w/ 16" rims came with this ratio. Both standard and autos had the same ratio. As for the locker I was under the impression that all the lockers were bundled with the 4.30 gearing and the 8.5" rear end as opposed to the 8" like most other runners. I know that some have modified rear ends to accomodate factory lockers, but it requires some grinding to make room for one of the pieces.
