Auxillery Fuel Cell 2002 4Runner

I have seen this and that for aux cells. I could buy a cell but I have one that I think I can mod to work. I have my 1st gen roll bar which will be in soon then the spare tires can live inside (not stoked but it will work). I have a RCI 10,12,13 gallon ( I forget). It does not have a fuel sender hole, I can cut and add. I have an idea of how to mount it. MY question is do I use it as a gravity feed or will I need a sending unit. Also I can get a 45 degree filler neck and pipe it up but need a y filler that I can attach inline to my existing line in. I saw something over at Sleeoffroad http://sleeoffroad.com/technical/tz_fuel.htm and I have seen it installed but not sure how I should go about mine or if I should do it at all.http://www.yankeetoys.org/mangler/auxtank.htm

Ok so I might go a different way again. For the filler I was thinking about using the marine flush mounted type and mounting it on the rear bumper, just under the rear door so you have to have the door open to fill it.

Currently the picture in my head has an issue with the 1 1/2" size on the filer marine filler neck and 1 3/4 on the fuel cell filler neck. I more than likely can use a reducer, but my next thought is the filler neck on the cell, should I use 45 deg. and attach a filler hose or a 0 deg. and use a 90 deg elbow with reducer attached to the marine filler.

As for the cell itself since its free, I will build a small steel cage to fit around it and bolt to the existing hitch frame bolts. Will need to add a skid to it but that will come later. I will cap off the unused plugs run the drivers side plug to tie into the OE filler neck after using a fuel pump and a top cap to tie into the OE vent system.

Am I missing anything?

Hey whatever happened to this idea?

I like the marine filler option. I think it would be best to have two fillers as opposed to a Y so you had control over which tank is being filled.

I think the route I would take is to install a fuel pump as a transfer only, and move fuel to the main tank as required. A separate sending unit/gauge would allow me to monitor fuel level in the secondary tank.

Since I have installed my new bumper that has a tire carrier I've been thinking about what to do with the space underneath. I took some measurements tonight using the bottom of the frame rails as my lowest allowable point. Also, the tire carrier crossmember would need to be cut out as well as the two tire pads at the rear, but in my case rear frame rigidity would be retained by the crazy heavy duty Irbis bumper.

Available size (with ample space around) would be 6.5" high x 18" front to back x 34" wide. This equals 3978 cubic inches which is 17.2 US Gallons.

Now that SOAZ is all CNC maybe I can get something fabbed up that will work. To be continued...

Yea I ditched the idea for now. I'm waiting to hear from a guy over on expeditionportal, he was trying to get the longranger uel cells imported. and there is a slip setup that may be able to be retrofitted to fit the 3rd gen.

http://expeditionportal.com/forum/sh...ght=longranger

And http://www.thelongranger.com.au/4run...efueltank.html for the tank. Now its made for 89-96 models so ultimately we will need to get some folks to give us measurements so we can really know if this will work but it's a clean install other than that. 130 Liters = rough 34 gallons.

Based on Longranger's dimensions (shipping, not actual) we're looking for two different outcomes. That Longranger is gonna hang down past the framerails by a couple inches at least, not to mention if you want to add a skidplate afterward. And 34 gallons is way more than I'll need for an aux tank. Figure that weighs about 204 lbs full (fuel alone). Sounds like its gonna be spendy too.

I am looking to keep the tank/skid even with the bottom of the framerails, which are the lowest point at the back of my 4Runner. At 17 gallons, full weight (fuel alone) would be 102 lbs. This would be equivalent to more than 3 Jerry Cans of additional fuel, which I believe will be sufficient for my purposes.

[edit] btw, i just ran across this cool fuel calculator: http://www.csgnetwork.com/truckfuelconsumpgphcalc.html

Taking into account the "look" of the LR tank I would enjoy a custom tank that utilizes the spare tire crank like the LR. I did the math on the 130 liters and I'm pretty sure it's 34 gallons. I agree 1/2 that would be super efficient. Hell we only carry btwn 16-19 now. Another full tank would be extremely beneficial.

I did this 2 years ago
plastic 10 gallon tank in bed, used a filler neck from summit (45 deg) a fuel tank switching valve (2 in 1 out) block the one that is open w/o power or plumb to vent between top of aux tank and main tank, plumed into 1/4" vent line 2, 1/4' lines 1 feed 1 vent put the vent about 1.5 inckes higher than feed line gravity feed, 1 switch at 1/4 tank just flip switch drain into main tank

ok its a scattered discription but it works more info? ask
