Automatic Transmission Compatability Question
I've learned a lot on this board and have the following question:
I recently dropped an 89 3.0 into my 88 3.0 4Runner that has an automatic tranny (A340H) and have read on some of the threads that it's possible to convert to a later model (post 96) automatic transmission, thus giving the ability to have the transfer case not integral to the transmission. Is this a good idea? How much trouble would it be to do and would they mate up mechanically and electrically? Would all plugs be the same? Any inputs? Thanks for any help given.

I believe there is a "How-To" on this at 4x4wire.com, it seemed like way, way more trouble than it is worth to fix it all up right, I'd swap in the whole 3.4L drivetrain at once.

I want to say it is "as simple" as getting the $450 adaptor tranny to t-case.
There are obviously other things like the computer part of the tranny and another part that needs to be machined, but the adaptor gets a gear drive case with the correct side front output for your IFS behind the new tranny.

I would just put the same tranny in again or swap the whole 3.4L w/tranny at once.
Lots of fab time required to complete that though.
