Auto tranny stopped downshifting

My 99 4Runner has stopped downshifting when you stop , you have to manually put it in 1st then go to drive after it starts moving . Was told it could be an electronic part forgot what is it called . Do I have to take tranny apart to replace it ? Any knowledge would be helpful as I an mew to automatics . Thanks

If it's a solenoid that's bad you should be getting a CEL. The CEL will tell you which one it is. To replace solenoids you have to drop the pan.

no lights or codes ever came on , been going on for a month or better . need to get it fixed asap as i need to move a horse and am afraid to pull the trailer with it acting like that . Was told by another shop could be a bearing but that didn't sound right to me . so if no cel , codes or anything what could i do to check it out ? thanks

How long has it been since the tranny was serviced? Has the fluid ever been changed? Maybe there's some gunk in the valve body that's keeping things from moving freely. Might be time to drop the pan and do a good cleaning.

i have only had it for about the last 10,000 miles so about 3 or 4 months . nothing but problems so I would say no tranny service has been done . Tranny problems , rear diff , random overheating when a/c is on but gauge doesn't show it , front left brake is sticking ( replaced pads and a new caliper and still does it ) , list goes on and only just 140,00 miles . Thanks again

Never, not once have I heard of a Toyota truck needing a diff at 130-140k...

I'd get a carfax and look for it being titled out of Florida or Kentucky...

Jeez, 3 grand?? I ruined my tranny towing a trailer 800 miles with O/D on, and that only cost 2 to rebuild. It shouldn't cost that much, especially if they can't even tell you what they think is wrong with it.

I would start with dropping the pan for a fluid and filter change. Maybe just replace the solenoids while your doing the filter. I think it's worth a shot.

Trans issues

I would start by checking all the wiring to the trans and TCM, then check the VSS's to make sure they are good along with the TPS. The TPS is one of the most common failures that affect the way an electric shift trans. works. Really sound like an electrical issue. Good luck.

what is VSS and TCM ? TPS is throttle position sensor correct ? Thanks .

Had 3 shops tell me a minimum of 3 grand for a rebuild and that was best case senerio and nothing major was wrong with it .

the rear diff has a metal on metal sound when you turn the yoke , noticed it when doing u-joints last week , pinion seemed kinda loose to me .

My sister is going through this same thing, ex it's a POS 2004 Heep Grand Cherokee.

Kinda the same problem, and all the shops are quoting her the same prices...

Dang, I'm in the wrong business...

Search for CDan on IH8Mud.com. He can get 50%-ish discounts on Toyota OEM parts...

The 50% is unconfirmed. YRMV. But call him up and have your VIN # ready.

Well I guess I gotta strip over the darn thing for I can remember it's there...

I have a Tranny/TC out of a 96? 98? Tacoma 3Rz... It was in a roll over, had 88k on it.

Other than it's been sitting for a long time, and it's got 88k, I don't know anything about it...

A340f IIRC.

Got the 4:88 diffs too Non ABS rear though...

Forgot to add that when the tranny started messing up for the first couple day it only did this at random mainly when warm , but when I put it in drive it would not move and you would have to press the gas almost alway down then it would jump to first gear . Ifthat helps . But seems like i would have a code for the tps tcm ot vss wouldn't I ?
just don't have alot of extra cash to throw down for things that aren't the problem right now .
