Audio guys (rear speakers not working) 3rd Gen

Hey guys, have a problem. I was on a short trip yesterday home (in the 99 Limited) and the girlfriend asked me to turn up the radio (she was in the back laying down). I thought it was plenty loud to hear (comfortably) so I faded it to the rear so that she could hear more of it. Well, as I did this the overall volume dropped until it was faded all the way to rear with no sound in ANY speakers. So basically both rear spearkers are not getting any sound. I took off the rear door panel today to test the power wire with a volt meter. When the radio is ON, the volt meter registers 230 millivolts at the plug. When the radio is OFF, the meter registers .4 volts. What gives? I'm assuming the head unit has taken a dump. Anyone else have any idea?

It's a limited with a factory tape and CD player. Are these pretty straight forward or do they ahve any external equipment (amps, etc.) located around the cabin, if in fact I do find myself replacing it?

It should have an external amp behind the deck mounted in the center. I new head unit would be a nice addition anyways and it looks like its time for one.

So this amp is one for hte back speakers or for the front or for both or what? Because the front still work fine. A new radio would be nice, but right now, if I can get away with a cheap fix to keep the stocker going a little while longer, i'd do that for sure.
