anyone running 18" wheel's or larger on a 3rdgen?
hello all, i recently bought ny fiance a 97 4runner to add to our family of yota's and was wondering if anyone out there is running a 18" or 20" wheel set on that gen runnerr? my main question is with a decent sized tire did you notice alot if any difference in your mpg? she doesnt drive it other than really to and from work 30 miles daily but i am still worried about it droppping the mpg, it doesnt do that great on the fuel economy as it is and dont want to kick myself in the a*s if i put nicer looking wheels on it but pay at the pump

I'm going to quote another member from another thread, I'm sure it'll give you some clarity;
Keep in mind that 20"s on average weigh 37 lbs. The cheaper they get, the heavier. Your stock wheels weigh 22.5 lbs. That's a significant increase in rotational mass. 275/45/20 weigh on average 37 lbs, which is about the average weight of 265/70/16. So with the wheel tire combo, you gain 14.5 lbs. This will place excess stress on your bearings, braking components, and WILL affect your performance as well as your MPG's. Expect the feel of adding 8 lbs of sprung weight to your vehicle per pound of rotating mass. 14.5 lbs x 4 = 58... 58 unsprung weight x 8 lbs of sprung weight/unsprung weight = the EFFECT of about 464 lbs of excess weight you'll be dragging around by going with 20"s. Next time you take three 150 lb folks in your truck, take note of how the truck accelerates and brakes.
Considered going with 20"s for a litle while, then pulled the trigger on 16x8" Volk TE37X's that weigh in at 16 lbs per wheel, or 6.5 lbs lighter than the stock 16 x 7"s.
Consider the following: More expensive tires + faster wear on brake pads/rotors & bearings + decreased gas mileage + decreased performance, (our 4runners are already lacking in that department)... Just for better looks??? - which is based on your opinion. It's up to you.

I'm running 18's on 33 MT's and yeah you give up the pick-up and mpg. I usually hit 230 to 254 on premium and depending if I drive to Seattle or not. When I run my 285's on stockies I've seen up 305 and mostly freeway but onn average and extra 25-30miles or so.

thanks, i saw that after i posted my question, i really only want to do 18" at the largest on her truck, but def not into chrome, i want a nice set of black wheels. i may just look into some nice 16's or 17's rather than sacrafice the gas mileage, plus as it was said in the post the heavier wear on brakes and longer braking time doesnt really appeal to me either

t4r.org may be more your speed, I guess it alld epends on where your heading with this Runner. If your looking for the 18" and up crowd, then maybe an offroading forum isnt the best place to be looking....
