Anyone remove the double decker shelf?

Just wondering if anyone has done this. I have a Rhodesian Ridgeback to haul around, and I like to have a cargo mat back there. But the shelf doesn't fold all the way flat, and I don't know how well it would work to put the mat over top of the shelf. I hope this makes sense. Any advice/suggestions appreciated! Thanks!

Actually, I looked at mine a couple of nights ago and couldn't figure out how to remove it. I didn't tear into it, but I suspect that there must be a couple of screws or bolts holding it to the frame near the vertical posts.

I bought a cargo liner for the floor, so it will be a few inches short if I need to put it on top when the DDCS is down. Would figure the mat to be the same way.

If it is like most cargo covers, try pushing the ends towards the center.. they are normaly spring loaded.. HTH

Yeah, I think if I can get mine out, I will probably leave it out, as I don't foresee me ever needing it for anything. I really didn't want it in the first place, but the only ones they had at the dealer had it in there. Thanks for the replies.

I don't have any idea about what shelf you are talking about, but that is a very cool dog.

The roll out cover. I don't think it was meant to use as a shelf but to pull over and hide or cover things you may have in the cargo area.

I popped mine out right away because I want full access to the rear cargo area with the rear seats folded down.

I got my cargo area cover from Canvasback.

I had one of these in my 93' Runner and really liked it. It stood up to leaky trolling motor batteries and other nasty things. I like them because you can slide heavy large things like furniture in and out easily which you can't do with most rubber liners. Things tend to stick to the rubber. Also the Canavsback covers the tops of the rear seats so when you fold them down the backs of the seats are covered as well.

The only down side to these is the velcro they provide isn't the best. But that can be replaced with the good 3M stuff when it wears out.

It was $115 for the liner for my 02' Runner.

He's not referring to the "window shade" cargo cover, he's referring to the folding double-decker shelf that's standard on 2003 Limiteds and optional on Sport and SR-5 models.

I don't believe it can be removed. At least, not without leaving a gap in the carpeting.

IMHO, that shelf is an utterly useless POC. I leave it folded flat, and I can't imagine any reason one would ever want to erect it. It obstructs using the space in the cargo area to the point that very little at all will fit back there with the shelf up. And the "cargo mat" that came in the big buck accessory package with the cheap first-aid kit is too short to fully cover the cargo area as the one in our Gen 3 4Runner did.

This shelf is a marketing department FUBAR comparable to the cladding issue, IMO,

Sorry. Didn't mean to cause confusion. In the 03's , there is a double decker cargo shelf in the back. It folds up or down and is totally separate from the cargo cover. It is just a shelf that you can use to stack more stuff in the back. I just read on another board that the Husky liner is made to work with the shelf folded down, so that's probably what I will get.

Tomus1000, thanks. He is a very cool dog, and we haven't had any problems with lions!

I bought the Toyota Luggage package here in Japan. It fits over the double deck if folded down and has about a 2inch lip and it has the Surf logo. It is both functional and sharp but a bit pricey.
