Anyone Re-geared after installing taller tires?

Taller tires than stock? You think it would help in gas mileage?

What's the stock gear on a 3rd gen V6 auto?

stock gears on my 98 v6 auto is 3.90 but thats because i have the 235 wheels package. On v6's with 265's it has 4.10's or 4.30's. I think only 4.3 if you have the factory rear locker tho..

Thanks for the info!

Does it matter if it's 2wd or 4wd? I have a 2wd.

I don't normally say this but you need to use the search feature. This has been a popular topic so there will be plenty for you to read. "Regear" gave me 411 hits.

I have re-geared from the stock 4.10s to 4.88s and I did benefit from it.

if you have a 2wd, odds are that you have really high gears stock and you can just get some junkyard 4x4 gears and be set. then again, regearing a 2wd is cheaper anyway since you only have one axle.

How do I find out if I have that package? I know I have 16 inch wheels for sure.

Doorjamb decal says, 225/75/15

No. I have put the lift and larger, 285/75/16 tires on the stock 16 inch wheels since.

225/75 means your rig came with 3.90's.

99runner4me,
This is the same issue I am dealing with lately. Main problem has been finding real answers on what all parts to buy. Seems like one of those mystical issues where the ones who know don't wanna tell you anything ...just wanna point you to other websites and tell you to find out on your own.

The way to tell what gears you have is by looking up a table of the different gear codes. Yours should be on the inside of the driver's side door if I remember correctly. There will be a code that looks something like "B03A" or along those lines. A letter, a two digit number, and another letter. That tells you everything you need to know if you cross reference the code with a chart of gear codes.
http://www.brian894x4.com/Gearratiosanddiffs.html
That's the best place I found for deciphering gear codes a while back. Its ALL about toyotas. I know I just pointed you to a website and said "look it up" ...but at least I gave ya an idea of what to look for ...which is more than I've been able to find when it comes to looking up a parts list for gear swaps.

Hope this helps.

Dealers don't put the stickers on. Federal law requires that the manufacturer affix the tags before shipping from the factory.

Yotas built in the US (4T or 5T in the vin) all have 225 on the stickers regardless of which tires really came on it, and built in Japan (JT in the vin) will have the correct tires shown. (Or maybe it's the other way around, I lost the link)

http://fastq.com/~sschaefer/Toyota_axle_codes.html

that will tell you your gearing....or you can jack it up and spin the tire and watch drive shaft.
