My 1st gen has rain gutters so I got the racks that mount to them.

I take it your 2nd gen doesn't have the gutters?

Check out the Thule website. I have one of their Hang Two surfboard racks that is cheap and works well. By cheap, I mean around $30 for the attachment that goes onto the Thule bars. If you are srtating from scratch, then you'd have the costs of the feet and bars to consider. Before the Thule set-up, I just used cinch straps on the existing rack, which worked fine. Check out some surf supply shops on-line to see if they offer anythig as well. Good luck. H.

I have had 3 types of racks to hold my boards. First started using the oem roof rack with pads on it, but since I'm a longboarder (9'6'') the boards stuck out back way to much. I then used a yakima setup, that was hooked to the front using the yakima q-clips to hold onto the roof, that worked really well for about a year and a half. But then that setup started to rip paint off and started to rust my door jams. So I ditched it.

This is what I have now.

It's attached to my safari rack and works well, the boards still hang off the back a bit but, it's better than having the yakima slowing taking off paint. Only problem is no one makes something like this I had a guy custom fab this for me.

I think what your talking about a soft rack that just clips onto the roof of any vehicle and you can strap boards onto it. It can be found nearly at any surf shop in your area.

I just roll down the back window and let it hang out a little, or fold down one of the back seats...works for me.

Seriously...

Also, it doesn't show everyone else that there's surf.

Plus, if it dont fit in your rear cargo area, then you should stay out of the water. haha

My 9'4" fits just fine with the passenger seat reclined, but I picked up the thule towers for the stock roof rails and use those with pads. Longboarders rule!

Where do you surf in Jersey? I used to surf in Long Branch, surfed a few times at manesquan, great surf when the nor-easters are rolling through.

i like the yakima racks ('strap thang'), but i noticed coming back from my last sesh in high winds, that the board was being blown up off the rack about a foot or two. pretty trippy to watch that thing for a few hundred miles like that, all the way through mojave and up half of the east side of sierras. the wind was lifting one edge of the board up and down like there was a hinge on the other side. still held tho, i figure that was about as bad as it would get. yakima does extensive shake-down on everything they put to market.

Definately find something that is soft and secure or else you are going to have major dents in your board (unless it's a tuflite). I just keep it inside with one seat folded down. That way I don't have to worry about anyone taking off with my $500+ board.
