Anyone have a 1998 4runner with factory keyless entry?
I purchased my 98' Limited used, but the owner never gave me the keyless entry remote. I have since purchased the transmitter, and attempted to program (via instructions on Yotatech) but to no avail. After visting the dealership and providing my VIN, I have learned that my 4runner was NOT EQUIPPED WITH FACTORY KEYLESS ENTRY!!! This seems ridiculous to me, considering it has every other option (power everything, leather, locking rear diff etc.) Was the dealer full of $%^ or did they make 98' Limiteds without factory keyless?

EDIT: OK, I see - I guess its possible to have keyless entry without having an alarm? I was thinking you would have both automatically.

The parts guy at the dealership told me that there was no factory keyless option for the first part of 98' (mine was manufactured pre-June). I bought the vehicle used with a aftermarket keyless/alarm. It stopped working so I had it removed. Now I want to go back to using the factory keyless. I'm still unsure if mine has the factory keyless option or not. Is it possible for a Limited not to have keyless? Could it have been removed by the aftermarket installers? The parts guy at Broadway Toyota used my VIN# and pulled up the options for my 4runner. He said it did not list keyless entry. This still seems very weird to me. Anyone?

jeff,
i'm missing you here: if you don't have the alarm system/keyless entry, how on earth did you even attempt to program the remote?
edit: ahh...ok, you have an aftermarket alarm system.
also, the 4runners use the black remote. do you have the black remote?
edit: i personally would just get an aftermarket alarm system. the rs3000 does not have many features. it will be very difficult for you to find a new, rs3000 unit at a reasonable price.

Sorry If I am confusing everyone here. Let's see if I can break this down:
1) I bought the 4runner used, 2 years back.
2) It had keyless entry, which I believed at the time was factory (I was wrong. it was actually part of an aftermarket alarm install).
3) I have no way of getting in touch with the seller to find out if the vehicle had Toyota's keyless entry before the aftermarket system was installed
4) The aftermarket alarm and keyless have stopped working and have since been removed
5) A trip to the dealer to get my ebay remote (black 3-button+panic) programmed has taught me that early 98' Limiteds did not have a keyless option
My basic question is, is there such thing as a 3rd gen 4runner Limited without something as basic as keyless entry?
PS - The remote I own looks like this:

the rs3000 brain unit is almost always installed under the driver's seat. is there a square black box w/ a harness attached to it? like in this writeup? http://www.4runners.org/articles/rs3000. download and look at the install manual. you may need to take off your lower panel to see if there are identical harnesses and taps going on under there.
if not, i highly doubt that you have the rs3000. quite possibly the previous owner installed something else.

I don't think he has the RS3000 at all. But if I am reading this correct, he wants to know if it just has keyless. I am not sure how to tell. Give me the weekend and I will take a look in my Dad's 1996 4Runner and see where his keyless entry module is.

On a lighter note... This situation has reminded me of just how spoiled we are. I'm already getting used to opening the door the old fashioned way - with the key! Poor me!

Not quite sure but I dont think all limiteds came with keyless/alarms. At least mine didnt. Only came with the key and theres no factory security light or module under the seat either.
